So in the next 2 weeks I will be adding one of these lenses to my bag. So you owners tell me whatcha think. I shoot a 5D. I dig wide angle those they both seem they would fit that bill.

So what would you get. the 35 1.4 or the 24 1.4 and why? Also pictures would be nice to see as well smile.gif.

Thanks!

Lets see this is an interesting one. I have both, however I think the 24mm 1.4L might be the one to go with. You could grab the 24mm 1.4L and then jump to the 50mm 1.2L. The 35mm 1.4L is an awesome lens, I just find myself using the 24mm more often. Oh and the 24mm is ridiculously sharp too.

Good Luck

I like the 35 focal length on crop cameras because it provides me a "50mm enough" field of view. If you're looking for wide, i'd go with the 24.

I was faced with the same decision and chose the 35 1.4. It has a great shallow DOF quality at 1.4 for head and shoulders portraits with the 5D. If I need 24mm during a wedding or engagement session, I use my 24-70 (which is just as sharp as a prime even at 2.8).

Just my 2cents...the 24-70 is definitely not as sharp as a prime, at least in my own experience! But it is great that you like the 24-70...

Brae, just a question, are you worried that the 24 might be too wide for you and that's why the 35 is in the running? Or are you wanting feedback on actual lens quality?

You know I love my 24... It will definitely have a wider look than the 35... The 35 will have less distortion so it might be helpful for some of the formal shots or when you want to shoot wide without it really looking wide...

But if you are in to the really wide look with a little distortion, I'd go with the 24. It has awesome color and contrast and is super duper sharp. I have not had experience with the 35 though so I am not qualified to give my opinion on lens quality comparisons...

Maybe rent/borrow both to see what you like?

24 1.4 is AMAZING on the 5d, i shoot it like crazy at weddings. Don't do head shots with it, and you will be fine. I use a 50 for portraits, and the 24 for just about everything else.

But it really comes down to how wide you want to shoot. I like really wide, so i went for the 24. But i have seen amazing stuff out of the 35.

I think that I have a pretty sharp 35 1.4 (it is the sharpest of two copies that I tried). I did a sharpness test on my 5D by shooting a wall of newsprint with the 35 1.4 at all apertures while evaluating my copy. I also tested my 24-70 at apertures from f/2.8 up and compared the files at the pixel level with the 35 1.4 in the corners and in the center. Both lenses were equally sharp and had similar contrast.

That being said, I had sharpness/ focus issues with the 24-70 and my older 20D cameras, and the lens has been back and forth with Canon a few times for calibration. A properly calibrated the 24-70 is equally sharp as any of the wide primes in the 24mm to 35mm range.

If you do a web search the Canon 24mm and 28mm primes are notorious for having soft copies wide open. Those that I know who have found a sharp copy of the 24mm 1.4 at large apertures will guard it with their life because of its rarity.
