I have a family portrait session coming up. My package includes an hour with the family shooting and a DVD will full-resolution files for $200.

The family is pretty big -- around 20. I'm wondering what I should charge for additional time (I'm thinking $75 per 1/2 hour?), and I'm also wondering if I should charge a travel fee. I'll be driving about 45 minutes each way.

What do you think I should be charging given the amount of people I'll be shooting, the time we'll probably need to shoot, and the distance I'll be driving?

why was this not figured in, initially? a family session is a family session - regardless of size.

why would you charge for travel?

more info please.

I think it boils down to what you feel comfortable with. Are you just doing the whole family or individuals and sub-families? I charge a flat $100 travel fee for family sessions, and I don't travel more than 1 hour each way. I don't know if that's high or low, but I am okay with it. I did have a request for a large family...I think 16-18 they wanted individual shots of all the kids, sub-families, and the whole family. It was 4 families if I remember correctly. I quoted them twice my fee and they didn't book. They were getting a ton of pics for the price of 2 sessions. I thought it was fair...I guess they didn't. Good luck and let me know how it goes. smile.gif

(EDIT) I do travel a good distance from my home area and if it's debatable I don't charge, but if I have to sit on the freeway and be away from my family for a good portion of the day I charge. Also no one has not paid the travel fee, so maybe I need to up it???

I charge $120 for the session and will travel for up to an hour for that fee. I have charged an extra $30 to cover my petrol costs for a sitting that was 2 hours away.

I did a family of 20 a while ago and charged and extra $50 as it is very difficult to get 20 people doing the right thing in one shot. If they want separate mini-family-sessions at the same time I'd charge and extra $50 per family.

I sell my prints separately, there are no Files included. That is where I make my moeny.

Just out of curiosity, are you giving them edited files? I ask because I can't see how the fee you are charging could possibly cover your time and expenses if you are spending 6 hours editing and then not selling any prints whatsoever.
