Full Version: Problem with Pinks and Reds... not sure what to call it

I'm having an issue with bright pinks and reds when I shoot. It is like they blow out or something and are too intense and then loose all detail. I can't seem to figure out how to correct this or why it is happening. Any thoughts, solutions or theories are very much welcomed. I put a shot from a recent engagement shoot up to show you what I mean. It isn't the worst of the examples, but it will give you an idea.

Is this straight out of camera?

If you are in LR you can pull down the luminance or the saturation tab on the Magentas and even set it to do that as default. Does that help?

+1, I came in to suggest desaturating.

Also, if you shoot Canon...what is your Picture Style set at?

Sorry it has taken me so long to come back here.
It is SOC, I shoot Canon 5D, that was a jpeg shot. I tried fixing the saturation in Aperture, but it mostly just flattens the area out. It is like there is too much saturation there so it just flattens out and plateaus the color. I want to get it right in the camera and avoid doing tons of fixing later. I had a wedding with magenta flowers and it was such a nightmare to adjust this problem. A friend suggested it was because I was shooting Jpeg over RAW. I thought I would do the next couple weeks worth of shoots in RAW and see if that improves the problem.

Does anyone else think that is the issue?

I have the same problem with some of my Canon cameras. I love my Canons but I think sometimes their response to red and magenta is a bit off. Have you done a custom calibration of your cameras? I have found the best way to fix the problem is to do a custom calibration and shoot in Raw. Since I did this I am much happier with my colors.

It is not a simple thing to do but if you really want to get great color it will help tremendously. You can download instructions and get the script to run the custom calibration here: http://21stcenturyshoebox.com/tools/ACRcalibrator.html

Basically you shoot a GretaMacbeth color checker, open the file in ACR and then run the script. It then tells you how to adjust your settings in the Camera Calibration tab in ACR to compensate for your camera. I have done this for all our cameras and it helps quite a bit.

Hope this helps,
Jonathan

Funny! I desaturate my portraits from my 5D sometimes too. Those reds are out of control!
