Full Version: Card reader not registering

My card reader has decided to stop registering in 'My Computer' and it was working fine last monday when i uploaded my last lot of files.

Its a inbuilt one, not a USB connected one. Anyone have any ideas?

Before concluding that the reader has gone bad, you might double-check that it's not simply just showing up on My Computer as a generic "removable disk". My older PC has a multi-media card reader built-in, and it originally linked up the correct icons with drive letters very consistently. I suspect some registry may have been stepped on along the way though, 'cause now the unique icons have disappeared into never-never land and the different card slots show up as generic removable disks. But I can still use the card-slots just fine.

Ever considered a mac? In all honesty, they're much easier to understand, and things just don't simply stop working for no reason. If my memory serves you correctly, you aussies now have an apple store! Check it out if you get a chance.

is it a powered or unpowered hub? what kind is it? hmmmm....

*sorry for the threadjack*

I don't know the difference between a powered or unpowered hub. It, uh, plugs into the USB port on my MBP. It came with something I bought...I can't remember what it was.

I figured it was the hub itself so I bought a new one by Belkin and that one does the same exact thing.

I've only got 2 USB ports on this thing. I NEED to use a hub.

How does your belkin one work?

Generally, you won't be able to run tons of devices off of a non-powered hub. The difference between a powered and non-powered hub is that the powered one, besides plugging into a USB port on your computer, needs to be plugged into a wall socket with a power adapter as well.

Belkin is generally a VERY good accessory manufacturer, so you'll probably have better luck with your new belkin hub over the other one. Let me know how that works out for you.

*apologizing again for the threadjack. I hope you can forgive me*

Trevor, the Belkin hub does the same thing. Things I plug into it work only randomly. I'm freaked out and I used to have my external HD plugged into the hub...now I gave it it's own USB (that leaves me with only 1 for the hub). I need a port for my Wacom and one for a card reader. Randomly stuff will just stop working, like if I put a CF card into the reader it doesn't do anything. I may have to repeat the procedure several times before it finally reads the card. The same thing happens with the tablet sometimes if I unplug it and then plug it back in. (Like if I'm taking the MBP somewhere.)

did that make any sense at all?
