This is such an interesting story and as soon as I saw the image, I distinctly remembered it making all the media rounds shortly after it was shot. While most of the photographers on here shoot photos of people happy — at weddings, with their babies or their kids — I thought the article was a great reminder about the struggles faced by the photojournalists (and journalists) who are out there reporting the news.

For more background on Sgt. Dwyer, here is an op-ed piece on him from the NYT today. So sad ...

I am always truly amazed by folks who go into the battlefield to capture these moments. I think the interesting line in the article is how the author says some folks think of their camera as a shield that separates them from the field, but that there is always the smell and sound that cannot take them totally away and makes them participants.

Thanks for sharing this.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is extremely difficult to deal with. Even now I still feel the effects from over a decade ago. In those rare times I would break down for no reason at all. I still get nightmares ever once in a while.

Some back history...

I was in the Army and was in a mechanized Infantry unit. We sent over to Kuwait City during Desert Shield which later became Desert Storm. We were all unprepared for that. All I can say is that it felt like hell on Earth.

Awesome article thanks for sharing. Can I recommend a book The Bang Bang Club. Its a great view into the minds of photojournalist under the pressures of war zones. Also War photographer its a DVD about James Nachteway.

+1 — amazing documentary! Such a humble, gentle guy. Not at all what I expected from a film entitled "War Photographer."
