I have a friend/client that has emailed me the following:

I've been contemplating getting a zoom lens for our Canon Digital Rebel XTi camera and thought you may have some thoughts and/or experience that would be of benefit. I think what would benefit us the most would be a lens with an all-purpose type lens so as to not have to continually be swapping between a 18-55mm and a 70-300mm. I think we would be using this in a wide range of settings and events (inside, outside, portraits, nature, etc.). Tamron offers an 18-250mm f4-5.6 lens in the $500 range. Would you give me your thoughts/advice/experience regarding lenses?

I would love to know if anyone has used this or knows more about it than I do. They are taking photos for pleasure. Thanks!

Not Tamron specific, but a general comment on superzooms based upon my Nikon 18-200VR and a Sigma 18-200 I tried:
There is no free lunch. To get that much range in a single lens you have to give up image quality and speed when compared to lenses with smaller zoom ranges.

I leave my Nikon 18-200VR on my D80 for daily personal and travel photography when I want to stay light ( I go for my 50 f1.8 when I want really light and small) but be ready for anything. The image quality is certainly not as good as my primes or even my Sigma 70-200. Would anyone who does not look at images all day, notice? Probably not.
The best camera to shoot with, is the one you have with you.

I have that lens for sale actually. LOL. I like it for the wide angle, but not really for the zoom. Depends on what they plan on using it for. I used it on vacation last month, which is the only reason I picked it up, and I liked it, but compared to my L glass, well - there is no comparison. LOL.

Unfortunately, it is all that I have. I don't have the angle. Mine is your boring 28-75 mm . Anywho, it works, but I had a bit of a learning curve with it. Now, it is my baby. Sounds weird, but I make it work and it does good. I just posted some photos with it using my old dino Nikon D100. Hee hee. I need to upgrade sooooo much!

The biggest problem I have found with those types of zooms (not Tamron, just the focal lengths) is that they are very soft at the long end. I would suggest getting something like the Tamron 28-75 2.8 xr. Thats not a bad lens for the price.

Thank you all so much!!! I have passed the information on.
