Full Version: Anyone use or have used the Nikon 35-70mm 2.8 for wedding work?

Hi OSP!

Well, I'm seriously considering purchasing a Nikkor 35-70mm f/2.8 as I don't have the funds for the 24-70mm or 28-70mm 2.8 models right now.

I have a 12-24mm Tokina DX f/4, 50mm 1.8, and a 80-200mm 2.8 zoom. I'd like a faster piece of glass to cover the middle ranges and thought this would be a nice fit for now.

I have my "kit" 18-70mm 3.5-4.5 DX but it's not fast enough for low light indoors with my D70s without going beyond ISO 800.

Has anyone used this lens for wedding work? If "yes" how did you like it?

Also, please feel free to comment on my "logic (if I can call it that)" re: coverage. Maybe there's a better way to go than what I've outlined.

As always, thank you for your help! tongue.gif

Thanks Tim! I've had some photogs say they wish it were longer on the far end. Do you find it too short at 55mm?

I have the 17-55 and love it. Its nice and wide but its a tiny bit short on the long end, but I think that you would be better if you went with something longer because you have most of the range of the 17-55 covered with your 12-24. Just my 2 cents.

I used a 35-70/2.8 for a while. The glass is very good but AF is slow.

That's good to know, thank you Hassel!

That was actually my first Nikon AF zoom lens! This lens came out before the 28-70/2.8. It also had/has a great macro setting. It's an extremely underrated lens that is very sharp. The down side is it is very slow compared to the 2.8 lenses out today.

I concur with this. It's a fabulous lens, and when we still used out N90, it got a lot more use, but the focus is a bit slow on the D300.

We just picked up the 17-5 2.8, and, although we haven't shot a wedding with it yet, it is amazingly sharp, and very fast!

I have a few screw around shots up in my blog, for 4th of July weekend that we shot with that lens.
