Hey everyone, hope all is well! Sorry if this has been posted before, but I haven't been here as much as I would like to, and I don't have time to try and see if this has made the rounds. Thought it was important enough to share though.
Anyway...
The battery blew out in my Macbook Pro. Unreal! What is even more unreal is that I am still using it! I attached some pix and a new one is on the way (free) but I would go here
http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbo.../batteryupdate/ and read this to see if it could happen to you.
I kept hearing these violent snaps coming from it. I work on a Cinema Display so I’m not looking directly at the lap top, finally it ended up sitting about 3/4 “ off the table because it blew right out.
Hope everyone is having a Niiiiiiiicce week!

Hey Frank! Long time no see! Hope you're doing ok... other than that battery blow out!
You may well have one of the dodgy batteries that they posted about a while back on the Apple website. There were a certain batch that they were recalling and changing for new ones so you should probably see if they still have info about it on their website and if your battery's serial number falls in the batch that was recalled. Even if it doesn't you may well want to contact them as we had our batteries changed even though they didn't quite fall in the range that was recalled.

I am hoping the battery is out and you are running off of AC power. If not, rip that sucker out immediately before it blows up something more difficult to replace! Eeeek!

I had mine in my lap when it did the same! That was close! It did discharge ALOT of heat when it happened. Apple was great about getting me a new batt quickly.

Frank - you need to use EXTREME CAUTION and stop using this battery immediately. Lithium batteries, once "ballooned" can catch fire rapidly, and the flames are extremely concentrated and HOT! They have burned down houses in some cases (not necessarily laptops, but other lithium powered devices.)
I suggest keeping the battery in a VERY safe place (like an ammo box - on the concrete floor of your garage) and not using it AT ALL.
You're lucky you haven't done more damage.... wow! Glad apple is sending you a new one man.
Take care,
Trevor
P.S. What were you doing when the battery blew? Do you use iStat Menus to keep track of your system temps? If not, I highly suggest using it - it's a free download, just google it. Enjoy!

I'm definitely a Mac Geek that rocks a Cinema Display and MacBookPro...I feel like I should be scared of my computer now. lol However, even if the battery blows out, I'd still take it ANY DAY over a PC. Ick.

MY MBP 17" did that.. I saw that it wouldn't sit flat on the desk and after a few minutes I found that the battery was slightly bulged.. not like yours but either way it is a fire hazard so pull it out!! Apple replaced mine ASAP when I told them.
You can still use the laptop under ac power, and if you're doing that most of the time I would pull the battery even if it were good as it will save it from some unnecessary charging cycles.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate your concern and suggestions.
I yanked it right after I read what you wrote Trevor. I will have to look into iStat too, thanks.
The new battery is here and installed (less than 48 hours after calling apple). The old one is sitting in a fireproof box until DSL comes back to pick it up.
I almost feel like the truck driver should be warned of the potential hazard. Guess they have done this tons of times though.

Wow -- you have the market cornered on "trash the battery" sessions!

After you get the new one...be sure to make the old one swim a bit...

Clearly, Frank, your images are too hot for some power sources.
