What colour space does everyone use? With me using LR more now, Im paying more attention to colour space. My 40D has the option to move from sRBG to Adobe 1998.

What do you guys do? Shoot at sRGB and then light LR or equivalent handle the colour space issues or have it shoot at Adobe 1998, calibrate monitor to 1998 and export with that colour space.

Looking forward to the comments.

Well, it depends on what your lab and vendors use. MOST use sRGB. I shoot RAW so setting color space in camera doesn't really matter... that's all handled upon export. Labs, most album companies etc. use sRGB. Pixel2Canvas accepts AdobeRGB files, as does WHCC for Press Printed products.... I just simply convert my sRGB files to the Adobe RGB colorspace for those vendors.

Honestly, you should be calibrating (using a colorimeter like the spyder2pro or equivalent) to sRGB colorspace with a Gamma of 2.2 and color temp of... ah crap I had a brain fart and can't remember off the top of my head - 6500K?

...6500.

The majority of labs are sRGB. Most monitors, at this point, are sRBG. My Eizo monitor can produce AdobeRGB but since my lab requires sRGB 2.2 6500 I run it in sRGB. My suggestion would be to capture in sRGB as well. Sure, you can translate when you download but why? By all means, calibrate regularly. I recommend the i1 Display2 colorimeter over the Spyder. I have both and appear to get better results from the i1.

Thanks guys. This helps. I shoot Raw as well so I guess this is mute. The thing is I have no idea how these colour profile products work. Cant I just set the monitor in the preferences section?
MeeksDigital
it has nothing to do with monitor preferences...... you say you're calibrating.... how are you doing this? are you using a colorimeter?

OSX has profiles on it which allows you to select different colour spaces. I have mine on sRGB with the 2.2 Gamma as you suggested. But thats it.

(Maybe it's a British thing, like "colour.")

I do everything in sRGB because there's a 1% chance I may have a client with a proper color managed setup, using a browser that properly interprets color spaces and has a calibrated monitor. Adjusting for sRGB gives me the best chance to get it to look alright on stock setups. My labs all accept sRGB so it keeps life nice and simple. In camera I have it set to sRGB but it's not terribly necessary because i shoot RAW.

I hope that answered your question!

you'll need to go further in order to be properly calibrated. those "profiles" don't take into account each monitor's unique way of rendering colo[u]rs.

A Colorimeter <--- (Click there) is what you really need, and you'll see a HUGE difference in your color accuracy once you start using one.
