Hi, I was approached today by a new Luxury Resort in Australia asking if they can buy the rights to one of my images to use as advertising for their Wedding Packages. Not a problem, I am happy to sell them the image. The problem is that I have not done this before and I don't know what price to ask for, and also what the terms of the contract should be. Can anyone help?

(I couldn't find a thread on this subject so I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section)

Thanks,

Cathy

First of all what type of "rights" are they looking for? Price will vary.

Royalty Free - meaning they can use it once for their use any way they wish - and you still have the option to license it out to others at anytime for any other use.

Rights Managed - You know how they are going to use it and put in stipulations with use and vice versa. Here they have to tell you where they'll use it and what for. There will be a time frame and expiration on usage. As an example they may use it for 6 months for a billboard and you agree not to license it out to any other company who wants to use it on a billboard for 6 month time frame. Or another agreement maybe you can license it out to any other company but a luxury resort for the time frame they need to use it.

Or exclusive - they buy the image and it's theirs to use how they wish whenever. You can not sell it to anyone else ever again. Obviously this is the most expensive option.

Hi Sandra,

Thanks for the response. They want to use it for one year on their website. So assuming it is only for web use I would imagine that it's not worth thousands, but perhaps a few hundred dollars? What are your thoughts?
