I just saw this online...I had no idea it was coming out! Apparently, I've been under a rock. Anyone know how the noise compares with the D3???

I pray Canon does. I'm looking to upgrade soon and I currently shoot Canon, but these new Nikons are looking very appealing!

Obviously this is an assumption... but since it shares the same processor, chip etc. as the D3 the noise levels should be on par with the D3.
I highly doubt Nikon would let it be any noisier.

Im sure Canon is just waiting to make sure that the 5D2 whacks the D700, so might as well wait for Nikon to release in case they need to tweak.

More information for everyone:

I think I just went to heaven and I didn't have to die to do it. (not sure that would happen anyway)

It looks like I've finally found a digital equivalent to my beloved F100. If the image quality is as good as the D3 then this will find it's way into my bag.
I still think the D300 is a great choice at roughly a little more than half the price.

Ahhhh.... thank you, Nikon. Now I won't have to convert those super dark ceremony shots to b&w, and I won't have to spend the extra $2,000 for a D3 to do it.

I LOVE my D300, but this is just great news as well! I will get my hands on a FF sensor finally. Just not at that D3 price tag. Ouch!

I can tell you that there is a big MP SLR coming from Nikon. It is looking like announcement will be coming around next PMA or Christmas time. However sensor manufacturing issues may push back announcement till PMA next year. Should be 16bit raw, between 24 and 36 MP with ISO 80 - 800 with 1600 and 3200 boost. Price around $9K and is aimed at stealing from the medium format market and 1Ds MIII as well.

Hmm, I thought the noise level was low @3200 ISO with the D300?

It is with Noise Reduction turned on.
Well it is official. I am back with Nikon and I don't plan to go anywhere this time! I decided to get the D300 for now as I really like the reach that I get with the 70-200, although it would be nice to get a D700 eventually for my 14-24!!!!

Depends on your definition of low :-). Noise, even with High ISO NR set to normal, and image smoothing effects surely are noticeable at such ISO's, but in a nice kind of way.
FX is a different league in this respect...
