Kudos to the first person who can figure out how this almost perfect circular sun flare came about.... and no, it's not photoshop!

Paul@lauraeatonphoto
filter would be my guess.

Nope, no manipulation on the flare either during or after the shot whatsoever. That's as it was shot except for color bump and high pass sharpening.

Paul, I gotta come visit you guys in NJ... I saw Jon Bon again this weekend and I'm smitten all over again!

You trapped yourself in a flare bubble!
Rich Smith
This pic just reminds me that I want a full frame camera. Thanks. smile.gif

This is SUCH a gorgeous shot!
JaNae
wow. if it isn't just part of a "flare bubble" then how did you manipulate the light to produce the flare ring? gotta know.
katiebev
AAHHH I LOVE this! No idea how it happened
Misty
Ooooh soooo cool!

Are you asking because you don't know how you did it or because you do know and you want to challenge us? w00t.gif

A bit of both I guess! I'm not the smart one ... my husband figured it out last night or at least we think he did!! Any more takers or shall I just spill what we think happened?

This next shot was taken after the first one and doesn't have the "flare bubble" as Shane describes it!! The first one is honestly pure fluke....

Instead of crosswise lens flair that leaves a trail as it gets caught in each of the elements this passed straight on and magnified/manipulated when going through the lenses and actually outlined one of the smaller elements on the camera lens and was picked up.

**EDIT** If that's the 14mm prime I have a simple image that would also help explain it.
Shane Snider
My official guess is that it's a distortion of the natural lens vignetting...

WOAH! That sounds so much better than what I'm about to say....

If you throw a 50% horizontal & 50% vertical guide onto the image, you'll find that the sun is totally dead center of the image... could it be that?

Edit: Bryce, it's the 14-24mm lens.

Fruit pastels aren't chocolate!!

So when you coming over?
*B*r*y*c*e* L*e*o

It's tracing the light fall off. Essentially you have different sized elements similar to what you see in this side shot of the sigma 10-22. It traces around the outside of one of those elements and that gets picked up by the sensor.

One of those itty bitty elements in there is in the right place at the right time to get traced and caught by the sensor.

Paul@lauraeatonphoto
Crunchies... we definitely need some of those too.

Yeah, my first thought was that the sun is right in the middle of the frame. There's no diagonal anything for the flare to follow. So, instead of being diagonal, it's pointed directly at the middle of the lens and sensor. So you get a big circle. But this seems obvious, so maybe it's something else.

By the way, be very careful when doing this (or any flare shot) as the magnified rays of the sun can seriously damage your eyes. Not something you want as a photographer.

Congrats! You photographed Tami's poltergeist!!!!

I just have to say that is pretty damn cool. smile.gif

OH! I'm so glad you posted this cause I had never seen a round flare until our trip to hawaii! I always thought maybe it had something to do with the sun being completely on the horizon on the ocean since you just can't do that in Colorado. smile.gif Yours is very different from mine, but I could actually see it in the camera and captured the same thing in 4 or 5 frames at least. When I checked, they are all in the exact middle of the frame, especially the most clear, and there are several that are close to dead center and not as bright. Completely crazy!

My image was taken with a 5D, 24-105 lens and I do have a UV filter on the lens.

I just LOVE your image. I'd blow that up and put it on my wall. wink.gif
