This is sweet. Looking forward to Canon's competing products before making a decision about switching to Nikon or not.

Don't switch. Trust me. Wait till End of September (at the latest) You'll see.

Lol, If i remember correctly the "big drop" in the d200 when the d300 was released.... a whole $100... jeez... thanks guys.... (unless I"m remembering wrong in which case please call me out)
Shane Snider
maybe... but you'll have a glut of people selling barely used D300s, which will be very, very nice.

Interesting- from the SB900 press release:

QUOTE
Photographers can now also select from three light patterns; “Center-weighted” provides the highest guide number and is suitable for images such as portraits, where light falloff at the image edges is of less importance. “Standard” provides a familiar pattern, similar to the SB-800, and is ideal for general photography and “Even” which delivers the most consistent edge-to-edge coverage, making it ideal for situations such as group photography.

Controls for setting the wireless Master and Remote have been relocated to the outside of the unit for easier access and frequently used functions are easily adjusted with a new Rotary Select Dial

Faster recycle, and better wide-tele range....

But man, $500!

Yep, the SB900 looks awesome...but $500!!!!

For sure!

Finally - 360 degree coverage on the top of the line flash!!!!
Shane Snider
Honestly,

Unless you are a TTL junkie, there's just no need to drop 500 bones on the sb900. But again... the good news is that it will drive down the new and used market for the sb800 and other flash units.

As far as switching goes, I don't think it matters anymore. Both camera systems are great. I am excited about the new D700. I really doubt that it will effect the price of the D300 much, but I could be wrong.

The SB 900 has obvious benefits. I just don't see most of us running out to buy 500 flashes very soon. Especially if we already have very capable SB800's. It's still really exciting to see a replacement for the SB 800.

Maybe I could get another D300 as my backup.. Or just wait until my husband gets his bonus to buy me the D700.. o.O

Actually I was really hoping that they would announce updates to their primes... *cry*

I have nothing to hold me to canon... seriously. I have a sigma lens and a quantaray flash. Both are working quite well for me but I will need to replace them within the next 8-12 months because the durability just isn't there. That said, since I have to re-purchase my flash and lenses, I'm going to go with the brand that has the best offering at the time I am ready to pull the trigger.

Joe McNally's blog is an invaluable resource for every photographer. On top of that he breaks up the monotony of learning with his dry humor.

Hi Matt.

I am not sure if you have rented the 5d or D3, D300 or so... To be completely honest, despite what anyone says, both systems are awesome. I am a Nikon shooter but I won't hesitate to say that Canon is an excellent company. If both Nikon and Canon weren't excellent, then they wouldn't be such huge players in the industry.

Now the next thing for you to figure out is which systems you like more. Ergonomics, lenses, look and feel, etc. You can't go wrong with either. Buying into a system and switching is expensive. So take your time. smile.gif

Yep, I'm aware of that. If you had asked me a week ago, the D300 would have been my choice, Today, the D700 would be my choice. When the 5D mark II comes out... who knows? Depends on if the rumored specs are real or not. I'm saving my pennies, and every week I wait will either save me money or buy me something better that was just released, so I'm not too worried about it.

Sorry, didn't mean to threadjack. Carry on with the D700 coveting.
