deleted. I'll just ask my photog friends.
I guess I"m just wondering if people are buying them and if I"m underestimating my clients by thinking they will think they are too expensive.

Canvases have become a major part of my portrait business, clients LOVE them. I would suggest contacting Roxanne and the gang at Pixel2Canvas and asking for pricing advice. My al a cart canvas prices are in the $500-$1000 range.

ETA: Here's what CB had to say: Hope it helps! Email me at info@pixel2canvas.com if you have more questions - we're always happy to break with the knowledge!!!
This is a really good question. Most of the people we hear from mark them up between 2.5 to 3 times. (250-300%) but you're right in assuming that every market is different. Now you need to ask a couple questions.
1. Is the reason you're only selling 400.00 sessions (session + Disk) because that's the product that you've created or because your market will not bear a larger price?
2. Quality when sold as such will always find a buyer. If your imagery is nice and the canvas is nice, some of your customers will purchase them. I am certain that you have people there in your town who drive Mercedes, people wear Rolex watches...so when the perception of quality is there, people will pay for it. Its up to you to position the product in that quality area.
3. It doesn't hurt to look at your competion. You have other photographers and studios in your market I am sure. So take a look at their pricing. Chances are that they have found a way for your market to bear the price that they are charging.
4. What is the size that you are showing? Most of the time people will purchase one size smaller. Show a 30x40 and they purchase a 24x36. Show a 16x20 and they purchase an 11x14. You need to understand that people will not normally go over the top, but come in just below it.
Ok, perhaps this is a start. Let me know if you have specific questions that I might be able to help with.
5. One more thing. Many customers add the canvas as a part of the package. So by offering the disk, they eliminate the need for small proofs and prints, but they offer canvas as a part of the package (say, session, disk + 16x20 canvas for 800.00) Or (session , Disk + 11x14 Canvas for 600.00) That way they represent the canvas as something other than a print. We tell people to consider the canvas as a fine art piece as opposed to just a large print.
Ok...we're here to help...let us know if you have any additional questions :-)

I thought we weren't supposed to talk about prices on this public forum? I"m still learning all the rules here.
I know for me, I would love to fill my home with canvases, but even at cost I'm struggling to purchase even a few. (Then again, I'm always saving up for lenses.) I don't have low end customers, but still, I'm just wondering if I'm having a hard time buying these at cost, will my clients still purchase them at 3 times that?
As soon as I get through a couple of big projects, I'll throw some pricing up and we'll see. The worst I can get is raised eye brows and a "no thank you."
Thanks for your info. If I have any more questions I know who to talk to! : ) I would love to hear from people who can tell how they got their first couple of canvas clients.
