I just sent in my 70-200 for service because it was squealing when i turned the focus ring. They said that some type of dirt, sand, or dust got into the lens and caused this problem. I dont know how this could have happened on a weather sealed lens but it did some how. so anyways if you stayed with me through my crisis/rant, how as your experience with nikon service been, and how long has it taken for the equipment to be repaired and sent back to you?

thanks everyone!

funny .... they told me the EXACT same thing about 6 years ago when I bought a P&S from them which promptly broke due to a stripped gear in the zoom mechanism... they blamed it on me sighting "sand damage" but i pushed them and they reluctantly repaired it... of course it broke about 3 months later (no, it had never been near sand, a beach, dirt, anything!) and they blamed me again... quoted $400 for the repair which was about $100 more than the camera was worth... had them send it back to me and i use it as a paperweight now.

needless to say, i hate nikon. I'm a canon shooter and always will be. Why? Their cameras are rock solid, and should you ever have a problem with a piece of equipment they treat you well and get the job done in a timely manner.

Sounds like you're just another number on their list. Good luck with that one.

I had a great experience with Nikon service.. (the one in New York).

Sent my camera in after it died, (66k Shutter) and it was back in about 10 days.

No complaints on the service I received.

(o.O) Are you comparing the build quality of a point and shoot to a pro grade dslr?

Thanks for sharing! Makes me a bit happier to know someone had a good experience.

Nope, but regardless of what piece of equipment you've got, a company should always provide you with superior service. That being said, I received the shittiest service from nikon and it turned me off bigtime to using their products after that. In fact the first dslr I ever shot with was a nikon, and one reason I didnt buy one was, among other things, the way they had treated me in my previous dealings with them.

I've dealt with canon through two repair situations and two grneral service situations, along with numeous phone calls which I made to simply ask them questions. Every time I've dealt with them its been nothing but a good experience, and I will continue to be a loyal canon customer for that very reason, among many others.

I've had three items repaired at Nikon in Melville, NY. Each time I had it back in about a week. Two were under warranty (70-200, VR quit working. D70 fried somehow.) one was not (D70 shutter replacement.)

Ahh okay. Ya everyone does have different experiences with different companies. Good call on your part then.

I've used Nikon gear for... oh... 17 years. I've always received quick and reliable service from them when I've sent stuff in for repair.

I sent in my 70-200 and got it back in about 10 days, good as new.

I just sent in one of my D200s for service. I hope it's faster than 10 days!

have you ever applied for the nps program?

Also i checked for any updates and one of the questions in the questions section said in the status bar "sent to customer" any idea on what they are referring to?
Joe Milton
Never did get around to applying for NPS. I suppose it would get me faster service but I've never felt the need.

I think "Sent to customer" means they're shipping it back to you???
JS Photo
Thats kind of weird because I shipped it out on Wensday and they should have just received it today.

I sent in an old but much loved p+s digital to them a few years ago. The camera took unbelievable macros and was well ahead of its time. I couldn't bear not to get it fixed when it died. The service was pretty prompt, well within the estimate they gave me. It's been awhile so I don't remember the exact details, but I do remember being pleased overall. They asked me to take out the battery and CF card, and when I got it back, it had a battery in it that I wasn't charged for. So I felt like I came out ahead! smile.gif

Well they sent me the work order and to say the least i am not happy at all!

Ok, so i got home from my assignments on tuesday and saw that i had an email from nikon and was like OMG they got my lens and are working on it! YAY. But when i opened it it had a pdf attached to it and it said for us to fix your lens its going to cost me $413.75!!!!!!!!!!!! I want to find the ceo of nikon and flip out at him right now! The lens is just over a year old and its still covered under warranty, so i dont understand why they want to charge me. It also said that it was a minor repair but they had to replace major parts. I just dont get how they can call it a minor repair but replace major parts on a weather sealed lens that has been babied ever since i bought it from b&h.
Rovi
NPS is cool because you get free replacement gear during repairs (at least here in Europe). Also, you get to test new gear for f*r*e*e. Just going to test drive the d3, 14-24, 24-70 for 4 days at zero cost. Woweeee!

Repairs are patchy and expensive. I sent in my 70-200 after I dropped it head-first (ouch). that took about 3 weeks but focus was still not sharp at the long end. re-repair took another 3 weeks.

My D200 service took about 10 days with 2 day shipping on either end.

well after a nice long call to nikon I got everything straightened out and they fixed everything for free. It took about 9 days but everything is all good now.

I live about 80 minutes driving time from Nikon's El Segundo (CA) facility, and I've always had excellent service from them on the few times I've had need to take equipment in. They've always turned stuff around in 3 to 5 business days, including a D2X drop that caused some deformation damage but didn't impact the camera's operation. I'm not NPS.............
