I love wine. I drink it..... daily....
I think wine, fruit, cheese, and chocolate is what is served in the waiting room to get into heaven.
With that said, while I have some knowledge of wine, I am not an expert by any means.
My favorite white and red wines are:
My favorite white wine is Ecco Dommani Pinot Grigio. About $10 a bottle.
My favorite red wine is Clos Du Bois reserve cabernet sauvignon. About $21 a bottle.
Sweet wines -- suck!
So what other wines should I be trying? What are your favorites?

Sweet wines do not suck.
If you say that you've never tried the 2006 Riesling from Hermes Winery in Sandusky OH. It is
spectacular.
http://www.hermesvineyards.com/ (gorgeous barn with live music too).
I really wish they would ship the stuff. They hardly use oak either.... I can't say enough about them.
My next favorite would be a geyser peak cab, 2005.
Then Juan Gil- a spanish red.

My favorites are El Dorado and Amador County California Zins-
for me, it tends to be the ones with an alcohol % of over 15.0%
(just read the label)-mostly because I like the flavor of those-
sometimes we pick out duds like this-but mostly I find it a good formula!
too many favorites to name- but mostly small vineyards-
My favorite wines are an awesome one(jammy and rich) with a 7-12 dollar cost
(but a 20+ dollar value:)

I voted for the margaritas, haha, but no, really my hubby and I enjoy wine at least a few times a month. For his birthday we had an awesome bottle of red, it was an '88 something or another, he could say, but I can't. We do little cheese and wine nights for ourselves ...

I sound like a newb, but he knows quite a bit about it.
But.. in all seriousness. I am the margarita queen.

I can make a mean one and I can drink a mean one as well...

for those of you who don't care for wine, if you ever get a chance... try Coppola's SOPHIA wine... it was made for his daughter's wedding (a special blend - almost a desert white wine). Too many guests kept requesting it, so his vinter started producing it for the public.
Otherwise Mondavi's Opus One is still one of the best reds under $300 per bottle.

Here's just a few of my faves. (these are what I consider "house wines" at my house).
I won't waste your time naming wines that are to pricey to enjoy regularly, so these are just a few that you can get often and not break the bank.
Robert Mondavi Woodbridge Merlot
Robert Mondavi Woodbridge Cabernet Sauvignon
I do not like the Woodbridge Chardonnay however.
A very special Chardonnay is the Grgich Hills. It is a little pricey, but I just can't enjoy a Chardonnay unless it is pretty darn good. Just a funny quirk of my palate I guess.
Now don't laugh, but the Charles Shaw "two-buck-chuck" is a great buy for the money. I like the Merlot, Cab, and the Shiraz. You simply can't beat it for the price.
My .02.

Jim, this is a good enough thread to get me writing again. Haha!
My favorite red by far is Antinori Tignanello, the original Super Tuscan. The current 2004 I have is #4 on the Wine Spectator Top 100 list for 2007. $80

Can I drink with you sometime?
I think the most expensive bottle I have purchase is a $20 something bottle of Clos Du Bois reserved cabernet and it was very good - but frankly I like some $10 bottles of wine better. I have a $20 bottle of Pino Noir that I haven't opened yet, but am anxious to try. Basically, I am frightened to try an $80 bottle of wine -- mainly because either it won't taste any different to me than a $10 bottle and I will feel like a fool spending $80 -- or it will taste out of this world and I will only want to buy $80 bottles of win from now on and go bankrupt!

We need a wine icon on here!

Well, I know how you feel, and most bottles of high priced wines have been disappointing because they really weren't significantly better than less expensive options.
But this Tignanello was a very obvious difference from the first sniff to the last drop. Just a wonderful, opulent, full-bodied, delicious Tuscan with qualities hard to find in something cheaper.
I once had a glass of a $250 Bordeaux that just tasted nasty to me. Yuck!
However, I've had really awesome wines for less than $10. One I always remember, but can no longer find, was another red named Tollo (which is not the current Cantina Tollo from Italy). It was, I think, a wonderful wine for about $8 which I used to buy in Denver. The store stopped stocking it, and I've never seen it again.
Robin and I sometimes buy a very very inexpensive sparkling white named Verdi which is just light and refreshing.
There are many excellent wines for less than $20.
I would love to drink and talk wine with you sometime!

wine pricing is an interesting beast. if you can find wines from winery that sells direct or wholesale (vs. using distribution) you'll likely find your best values. Oh, and it's fun touring around new wineries too.

If you're not lucky enough to live in places where you can visit wineries, then your local wine shops (not your supermarket mind you) should be able to tell you which wines they carry have smaller production volumes or which wines they bought directly from the producer and not a middle man.
as a small vineyard producing 800 cases/yr, we sell out without the use of a distributor. our wines fair well against much higher priced wines class by class and are often told we could raise our prices -- however we like offering a good value to our customers. if we sold into distribution, we'd likely have to price differently (higher) because distribution is expensive and to make the appropriate margins in distribution the entire pricing structure would probably slide upwards (kwim?).
