Full Version: how do you figure out your pricing?

But, I couldn't find any posts in regards to pet photography pricing. I would like to include this and potentially specialize in just pet photography and need some guidance. I've done searches into other photographers in the area, but most offer 'portrait' sessions with people. Their rates range from $150 an hour (no disc) to $500 which includes a disc. Would people, especially in the OC, be willing to pay 'people portrait' prices for pets too? Would they rather have a lower sitting fee and the option to buy prints, or just a higher flat fee with a disc (something i would prefer).

And I'm kind of at a loss as to what to charge since they vary from so low to high. (o.O). How did you all figure out your price list?

Thanks!

I would come up with my prices the same way I'd come up with any other prices. Figure out what your costs are and determine your necessary revenue in order make a profit. Basing your pricing off others doesn't guarantee that you will be profitable b/c you do not know their expenses or how they came up with their prices. I would check out www.photolovecat.blogspot.com--there is an excellent pricing write-up in there.

Just b/c they are pets doesn't mean you have to lower your pricing. People who choose to get portraits done of their pets do it as a luxury therefore, I don't think it is unreasonable to charge a profitable amount. I charge the same for pet/horse sessions as I do people b/c my costs are the same.

As far as what to offer--that is up to you, your business plan and your market research. I've heard of pet photographers offering everything from prints and CDs to albums and storyboards. Your options are limitless.

there was a good article in rangefinder, maybe a year ago about someone who specialises in pet photography.

That might help.
