I'm still in the search for a good starter camera. Can anyone say anything about the 20D compared to the 30D?

I would purchase the 20D used.

thanks!
Bellissima

Hi Jessica,

I went through the same buying experience about a year back. It was around the time the 40D came out and a lot of people were unloading both 20Ds and 30Ds. I picked up a 20D here on OSP after a lot of researching between the 20 and the 30. I know some may disagree (usually the 30D owners) but they're virtually the same camera. Back at that point, the 30 was still bringing in a good price and so I went with the 20. I've been extremely happy with the images. When I made the switch I had a lot of folks beating on me about it being all about the glass and less about the body, so I tried to get as competent a body as I could and then I tried to put some money into some quality glass. Like I said, I was real pleased with everything. I'm sure the used prices on the 30D have come down as well so you should be sitting in a good spot. I think the 20D is a great camera though. just my .02

Thank you very much! That helps me out A LOT! I'm still kinda "camera dumb" but i'm learning. I found a 20d for $500 so i'm lookin at that one, if it hasn't sold yet. I'm trying to stay low so i can invest in the lenses more.

that's really smart actually, lenses are basically the most important thing.
i definitely agree with what JakeR said.
if you can go with L series glass, you won't regret it, the lenses will stick with you and last through many body upgrades.
the first lenses i bought when i was starting out were the 24-70mm f/2.8L for a good general purpose lens, and a 50mm f/1.4 for low light situations.

I'm debating renting another 5D for a few big weddings coming up, or using my mom's 20D, here's my question, Can I use my L-series lens on a 20D, I remember hearing some issue with compatiablity and just wanted to check... Does anyone using a 20 or 30D know, also should I rent the 580 flash? I haven't tried her pop up but that idea scares me, I love my primary set up- thanks! Appreciate it

i own a 20d at the moment(trying to sell it,) compatibility is the same as the 5d, the lenses i use with it are: 50mm 1.4, 24-70 2.8L, 70-200 2.8L IS.
and if you need a flash a 580 will work a whole lot better than the pop up. i own a 580exII for all my flash needs.

definitely do some test shooting before the event to make sure you're happy with how things turn out with the camera.
