Full Version: Skyports and NON-PC Speedlights?

Can someone tell me or link to the proper hot shoe adapter to connect skyports to an SB-600 or any non PC-equipped flash? I have found only the Paramount adapter from B&H here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/4213...Female_Hot.html (Not a Rick Roll!!)

But I am curious if there are other (cheaper) options, as I need to buy a few. I assume they are the same as for Pocket Wizard applications.

What I really want is one that has just the Mini plug socket within the Hot shoe, and not the extra cable, as I believe the Skyport comes with the cable,...correct?

Thanks!!

I have one SB-600 and one METZ 58 AF-1 N which has some of the perks of the SB-800. Neither of which have the PC-sync socket.

Andy, I don't know much about the METZ, other than it works with the Nikon CLS, but I don't know if it can act as commander or only as slave. If it can act as commander and it can fire the SB600, and if you intend to use Nikon's CLS then it's fine. However, if what you want to do is off camera lighting, my suggestion would be to get rid of those 2 flashes, which should give you around $550 for both, buy an SB800 for the TTL on camera stuff, and then buy 2 used Nikon SB25, SB26, or SB28. All of those flashes have as much power as the SB800, more power than the SB600, they cost about $100 each, and they all have a PC sync port. I used to have 3 SB600s and I sold them all, bought the SB800, because of the PC sync port and the ability to use a battery pack, and I just bought an SB28 from Adorama for $104. I'll be buying another one in the next couple of weeks. I think that for what you can get for the flashes you have you can buy an SB800, 2 Nikon SB28s, and with your camera pop up flash and the SB800 as slave you could still use the Nikon CLS, but for outdoor or longer range stuff you'd have technically 3 flashes at your disposal. Hopefully I didn't confuse your too much. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the info. You bring up some good ideas.

The METZ will work as both a commander and Slave and has a higher guide number than the SB-800, if I remember correctly.

Eventually, yes I would like to have the SB-800 however, I am not concerned with TTL and CLS at this time. While it is nice, I have been using manual mode for some time using my on-camera as commander anyway. My concern is that the Metz's sensor is very small and directional, and doesn't always fire, especially when under an umbrella. This is the only reason I am unhappy with the Metz (Don't get me wrong, this is major, but it is what I have to work with for now). it is great on-camera with ITTL.

So I want to start with Skyports to trigger the flashes, and then grow to SB-800 as I progress this season. When i have some downtime, I will consider selling both, as you mentioned. Any good suggestions for selling to get that sort of return?

The funny thing is that back when I had my N70 in school, I had an SB-26 (new)and a Vivitar 285HV(old), both hand me downs from my father. All were stolen. I knew nothing about off-camera flash then.

Thanks for your insight.

The real reason we need skyports or PWs is because Andy here is going to switch to Canon and say goodbye to commander mode and CLS. smile.gif

I have sold all my stuff, from SB600 to my D70s and some lenses through either Ebay or Craigslist and I have had pretty good luck. For my SB600s I got around $10-$15 less than retail value, which I thought was pretty good. You may also list them here, although from what I have seen, please tend to stay with Nikon or Canon stuff and usually at the higher end, so I don't know that anyone here will take the SB600. Bummer about the Vivitar and SB26.

NNOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Come on Andy, focus, don't give in to the dark side, they are using a Nacon jedi mind trick on you, close your eyes and focus on that black and yellow colors of the "Force". laughing.gif laughing.gif

Just kidding, I know, I saw that other thread about you guys aligning to 1 system of gear, which makes total sense. Best of luck.

i haven't read this whole thread, but I have the skyports and LOVE LOVE LOVE them. The one problem is that the box is missing the correct cable connecting your flash to your camera (go figure). If you drop by any camera store, they should have it for about $10.

One of my best purchases ever.

So back to my original question?.......
Anyone?
