Just say No to WWW

There's a small but growing movement in the blogging community to get rid of 'www' in URLs, something I agree with. It's extraneous and no longer needed-by now everyone knows it's the world wide web, why even use 'www'?
Graeme Ottley
Interesting....I never type www anymore when Im typing the URL.
JimCook
to distinguish it from your other subdomains?

If both works, why not be flexible? Of all things to fight for... Maybe I'm just not understanding. Is typing www holding us back from progressing or something?

For people like me who have webservers running on their machines, and for people working in web hosting facilities to be able to access the websites they need to use to management and configuration without burning up any of their bandwidth. Firefox, IE, and Opera all do it automatically. You don't have to use it, but for those of us who do actually need the distinction it's pretty userful.
Lynn Bernardi
Why use it? Because some crap hosting companies won't display pages right without it. It's less common now, but I still see it happen. Anyone with half-way decent hosting shouldn't need to worry.

I don't really get the whole "no to www movement". If you know your domain will load without it, I'd not bother with using it in your printed materials, but really does it make that much difference either way?
Lisa O'Connor
Interesting..........Actually, I've never thought about it before - this is one of those things that makes you go "hmmmm...."

Now there's some great advertising to get people to call (even if you didn't intend it to be that way or did ya)?! thumbsup.gif

Christine Tripp
I agree that it just makes things a bit more confusing. My mom, for example, just learned how to use the internet, and would totally be lost without the www. Many people do not like "new" ways of doing things. Or things that change. I figure, those who are in the know can save time not having to type www every time, and those who don't won't.

Also, what about when we type out the website, our systems know that when you start off with www. then it will be link-connected. But if you just type the businessname.com then the word processors/email programs and so on, don't pick it up as a website. So we have to then type http:// which to me, is WAY more work then just www.

I hope this makes sense. I'm not one to know all the different 'puter terminology.

Yeah, but by default most servers will route to port 80 anyway for domain traffic..

But it's a stupid movement.. seriously... awwww.. too lazy to type www? c'mon...
Lisa O'Connor
LOL..........Jim how do you really feel about it?! tongue.gif

I tend to think there's a "few" more important issues out there
than wondering if I need to extend my little digits to hit "w w w" on my keypad.

Subdomains and ports are two different concepts.

The beauty is that if you set it up right, you can type www or not and it will still work. I chose not to display www in my URLs though. It's not any more confusing and in fact is less so because I need not specify to people "you need to type www first". The less they have to type in the better.

I just say to people goto tristantom (my name) dot com and boom, they are there no matter if they use www or not.

I have to say that sometimes the www helps balance out the url when seen in print (like an ad). Bookending the domain with www. and .com just looks right (sometimes).
