Full Version: Problem with my 580II Flash

I was shooting this wedding last weekend and was having some major issues with the 580II on the hotshoe of my 5D. It would randomly change itself from ETTL to TTL and blow out whatever I took. It's never done this to me before! I haven't changed any settings or custom functions on it lately. And it wasn't all the time. Sometimes it would be on ETTL and be fine. I couldn't find any certain pattern for it so thats why i'm so confused!

Any clues as to why it would do this?

As a side note, my 5D was sticking as well.... EEP! No Error code or anything, just a sticky shutter and having to remove my battery/CF card to reset. Did it a couple times during the day. Is all my equipment dying on me at once?!? ACK!!

Help! THANK YOU!

Stephanie,
Sorry to hear that you're having this problem.
I'm actually experiencing the same problem. What I usually do when my flash change from ETTL to TTL, I just turn the head of my flash to the side and press my shutter half. That will change my flash from TTL to ETTL. I don't know why this is happening. I called Canon and they couldn't give me an answer....Grr!!!! mad.gif

Anyone have any ideas about this?? Any insight is appreciated!

thanks!

probably just need the shoe or foot adjusted/replaced. the metal foot of the 580II is much more solid than the plastic and could have loosened the camera hotshoe, or the foot might have loosened as well.

holy cow, it started happening to me this past weekend as well, except it was on my mark III. I was getting frustrated so I just put it on my 5D and everything was fine... After testing it for the better part of this week everything seems back to normal again. (After cleaning my shoe) I have a feeling it had something to do with getting sand all over the camera and possibly having some in the hotshoe...

looks like this guy has a solution....

Lol.... uhhh george.. that's why I wrote in 580II. The 580II has a metal foot, the 580 has a plastic. The increased strength of the 580II's foot allows more pressure to be put on to the hotshoe of the camera. This could possibly "wiggle" it off of the contacts and cause the contacts needed for ettl to no longer be made. It could also could be a foot problem on the 580II which is usually remedied by either sending to canon (best option) or by removing the shoe and re-inserting the flat wire connections back into the foot to make a better connection.

Oh yay! SO glad to see it isn't some weird magnetic field around me breaking all my equipment. smile.gif

I'll surely check out this article. Thank you so much!

I understand now. I thought the II would be the better option. Oh my. Hope that mine wont get loosen also.

I always thought the plastic shoe is crap but it seems the new one is an "intelligent" solution.

I won´t mess with it. My nearest Canon Repair Center shure will fix it if it occours to me.
