I am only related to this story in that I have read it and I relate to it, having been hassled by cops, railroad folks and ordinary people to the point that I keep a copy of the LIRR and NYC Transit memos stating there is no ban on photography anywhere and Burt Krages excellent pdf file.

This stuff happens. Folks make up law as they go because while they may (or may not) be trained in enforcement, they have little training in law. Push the issue, call the cops, call your supervisor...I'll call the NY Press Photographers Association and the NYC Civil Liberties Union and most of all, take a snap of the folks who are harassing you. Blog it. And let them know it.

different circumstances will warrant different reactions/actions.

no image/card is worth my life........

Would this have been avoided if there was a quiet conversation as to the intent of the images. I guess its the sign of the times we live in where people are so paranoid of predators etc. Things to be aware of.

Man that's so ridiculous. I keep a copy of the Burt Krages pdf in my bag at all times too.

What I find even more silly is the fact that every day, you are being recorded and photographed by 'big brother' and NOBODY says boo about it!

But a photographer working on a personal project is the 'bad guy'.

*sigh
