I was approached by a collage student asking if she could do an internship with me for the summer. My question is do I pay her for her time? I am a small one amn show and don't really have the money to pay out. Just wondering what the norm is?

Hey there, try not to post the same thing into multiple categories. It'll really only bug people and won't help you get an answer any quicker.
If you can pay then do so. If not and they're ok with it, then don't pay.

I am a high school student and i have been looking into many internships. Most of the smaller companies dont pay, only larger companies like newspapers. So its the norm to not pay since you are a small one man company. Although the intern might ask you to sign off on a college credit form, thats one of the main reasons why college students look for internships besides resumes. Hope that helps a bit.

In college I had a bunch of internships (though not for photography) and I never got paid. The experience was the "payment". I never felt robbed, I felt as if this person was taking time to teach me and help me to better myself. I did get college credit for it and that was enough....I say internship means no pay. An assistant, on the other hand would be paid.

In college I didn't get paid at my internships. Not photog related, but everyone I knew that was doing an internship (from various walks of life) was an unpaid intern.

I don't know about the photo interns, but, I and everyone I have known so far, got paid really well in college as Engineering interns. My guess is that it is different for diff fields.

i've had 4 interns now and not one of them are paid any monetary amount, EVER. the whole point of the internship is to learn...thus they are paid in experience. if anything THEY pay to do the internship as they have to pay the college for the credits to do so.
