Red eye and childhood eye cancer </H3>I tend not to freak out about stuff I have no control over. Ok, well, sometimes I do. But I try to stick with the things I can control.

That caveat out of the way . . . I came across this site today about red eye and childhood cancer.

If eyes DON'T show normal red eye (one eye is normal red with flash, but the other eye has a yellow or white dot), it is something that should be checked out by a doctor.

Easy-peasy check.

If you want me to do this for you when I'm taking your child's photos, remind me.

Now, stop worrying and give your kids a hug.

Oddly, I learned this on Montel many years ago. Grandma noticed one eye was red and the other not so she took the kid to the doc just in case, and he had some kind of cancer.

That's kinda crazy! Thanks for the tip!

Awesome tip!

Actually, all kids shoud have a yearly eye exam starting at 6 months. Yes that is right - six MONTHS! A good optometrist/opthamologist is trained in doing eye exams from that age.

Both my husband and I do not wear glasses, but through some twist of fate, I have two kids that have amblyopia - the type which one eye is far sighted and the other isn't. The brains shuts off the blurry image, and if not treated (if caught early, you only need to wear eyeglasses) will lead to blindness in that eye.

I didn't know this, and at my baby shower an optometrist friend told me about the six month checkup. I hauled all my friends kids as well as my own into the office, and it turns out both the baby and my oldest had this problem (a 1/100 occurance in kids). Lucky, with much persistance, we were able to get the oldest's vision back in his eye, and the baby never suffered any vision loss at all.

We had no idea, and looking back there were no symptoms - he could already read at this point.

Eye doctors can spot all sorts of things with a routine eye exam - definitely a reason to get your kids checked!
