A soft charge is a slower charging mode that doesn't get the batteries as hot.Michael is right about using the soft charge when possible and running the refresh (also called condition) cycle every so often. This discharges the batteries completely and charges them again. It is meant to erase the "memory" effect where the batteries lose capacity over time.

They have been charging since 4pm and they are still not done.
What does the manual say? Some chargers soft charge by default, others are in fast mode by default.I have one charger with a very slow mode that takes hours to charge and another that will charge a set in an hour. The batteries are so hot after a fast charge that you can't touch them.
