I am going to grab a lightstand to add some off camera flash to my bag. From strobist, I read about the Bogen 3373 which is a nice compact lightstand. The only thing I worry about is height. It is only a 6' stand and I want to make sure my light is above my subjects. I am not looking to drop a fortune on 13' monster that will weather a hurricane, but just a good stand that will work well for receptions. Any other ideas?

Check out these recommendations from the man: Scott Kelby. He's got recs for someone on a budget, or some extra $$. This post in particular is part one of an excellent lighting gear week he did a short while back. His blog is a daily must see. thumbsup.gif

When I read your reference to "the man" I thought you were going to mention Zack.

I would not consider Mr. Kelby "the man" on this issue. smile.gif

See Zack's recommendations here and click on My B&H List of Gear.

I know you want something lightweight, but when you hang a decent sized umbrella off a stand, you really should have something sturdy.

Thanks for the links Matt ... both of you =)

Sweet! You're right, Zack is most definitely another authority on lighting advice. thumbsup.gif

I have a few of these stands. They are the most versatile stands I have ever seen. They work as a regular stand, a boom stand, or a reflector holder.

I got the 3373 based on strobist recommendation, but its not really strudy enough for a big brolly with a bit of wind - I used my bad to weigh down the legs.

Ive been looking at the 3363 recently its double braced and it is air cushioned - Ive caught my fingers a few times on the 3373.. eek!
