Full Version: Really Lame Question
OpenSourcePhoto > Digital Photography > Misc. Photo Question
Jill Higgins
Someone asked me about photographing local things, so I have started doing that and plan to put some of the gallery wrapped canvas prints in a local store. My question is...should I sign them? Is that lame or does that make them look more like "art?"

Here is an example...minus the border and logo obviously...and printed on canvas:

Second question...if I do sign them...

(I'm almost embarassed to ask this.)

...should I sign them neatly or more sloppily. biggrin.gif I told you it was a lame question. But I was an elementary teacher for nine years, and I have perfect handwriting - it looks like it is straight out of a handwriting manual. Usually signatures are kind of sloppy like a doctor's! biggrin.gif The only reason I ask this is because I think if I were to sign my name in the neat, teacher handwriting that I have - it might be distracting - too legible if that makes sense.

Oops...I have a third question...if I should sign - what should I use?

The area that I would is sign is dark so I was thinking maybe metallic silver, but I'm not sure if that is safe on canvas.

TIA

I'm not a fan of signatures on photos, so I would say no signature. I think it would be better to mount a card next to each print with your logo and website.

But if you decide to sign them, I think you should use your regular signature.

As far as what to use, contact your gallery provider and see what they suggest.

With Gallery wraps I sign mine on the bottom wrap (essentially you can't see it - but it's there if someone looked for it). I sign them neatly, I want it to be legible. I use a silver paint pen or a sharpie.

Ahhh...signing on the bottom is a great idea!

Jill, I've been in that same boat. I've actually had 3 or 4 people ask me to sign the images they've purchased from me. That was really weird and I felt a little embarrassed. I like the bottom idea.
