Hey all,

I know this can be a personal question, but I'm curious as to how many people on here are insured..? Who do you use? Average cost? Etc.

Reason I ask:
I just got a call from a resort where I'll be photographing a wedding tomorrow saying that I need to fax them a certificate of insurance that states my company insures them for up to 1,000,000 dollars. Crazy considering that the wedding is tomorrow, and they are just letting me know this today. *big stressful sigh*

Edit to say:
Does WPPI offer insurance??

Absolutely insured - liability and equipment. I use Marsh through PPA. You can try Hill & Usher too or State Farm. You might be able to get the insurance today. I was able to get my equipment insurance through Marsh the same day or within 24 hours - I was doing a large upgrade all at once and wanted to make sure it was covered from day 1.

I pay about $300 for liability.

I think it is common for venues to ask for a certificate of insurance. I know I have been asked.
Michelle M
Do you pay that monthly? Yearly?
jdelvecchio
Oh, sorry - that's $300/ year

Maybe this is a dumb question, but why the heck would they need *your* company to insure *them*?

lol, I meant to say "covers them" for up to 1 million, sorry wink.gif

Also, I wanted to say....
It's one thing to have insurance but it's another to (I don't know quite how to word this..) cover every resort, park, church, etc. that I plan on taking pictures at????

I have to agree with this. Your insurance covers your business liability and gear. Was it just misworded on your part?

Check out SafeCo, I think Zack Arias uses them.

Basically, the venue wants to know that if you bump Gramma in the head with your 70-200, you are going to be able to cover the damage and when the venue gets sued (because the venue looks like a bigger pocket than you) they know they can come back to you and you have sufficient insurance to pay out the claim.

Since you are working on their property, you do expose them to a certain amount of liability. It is kind of like when you hire a contractor at your house to put on a new roof - you absolutely are going to make sure they are insured because you don't want to be sued when they accidentally drop a hammer on your neighbor's new car.

Also, I wanted to add that they probably just want a certificate of insurance - which means that your insurance company will notify them if you cancel your policy. They are most likely NOT asking to be named as an additional insured on your policy. If that is what they are asking, you need to go back and find out more information. All they should need from you is the certificate - proof that you currently have insurance and that they will get notified if you cancel your insurance.

I went with Marsh... better late than never. Thanks for all the info Jessica (that's actually the name of my bride for tomorrow) smile.gif
