Full Version: Lines on images

This was taken with a faulty Canon 5D. I'm trying to figure out what the problem is. Sometimes it's on the entire image, sometimes half or less. Have you had this problem? Notice the vertical lines.

Hmmm... I'm not sure, but I know some people have posted before about getting some feedback from other radio-type/electronic devices...
I don't know if I'm helping at all.... Just trying to remember what was said.

Also, are you sure it is not your computer? (Or, are the images like that ON your camera?).

first of all, what are the images of?

what are the lighting situations?

what ISO and shutter speed?

answer these and i may have an answer for you. it's REALLY hard to give any kind of answer without some basic information.

It's happening in different lighting situations. Two images I'm looking at are:

ISO400
f11
1/200

and

ISO200
f5.6
1/8

It's not my camera, but the images are now on my computer. The lines run horizontal, sometimes in part of the image, sometimes on the entire image. Here's another example, from a close up section of another photo (shot in jpeg, shown original size, not blown up):

Hmmm. Ok so you had it right the first time. Yes, it is the camera. The problem is called "banding", and it's a 5d, that's an issue with them. Send it to canon and see what they send back as a service estimate. Feel free to google "5d banding" (with or without quotes) and look through the information. If it's happening more than just in deep shadows then you probably have a sensor issue, as i said, shoot it to canon and see what they say.

BIG question nobody asked...

What AF mode are you in?
What version is you camera firmware?

Some auto-focus modes with certain lenses (when the camera first came out, which leads me to believe it's old firmware) in AI-Autofocus would cause "noise" patterns on the images.

Simple things to try, make sure you are using "One Shot" for focusing and make sure you have the latest firmware from Canon (available on the website.) See if it still happens and report back.

Someone told me that Noise Ninja can fix images that have these lines in them. I seriously doubt it, but since I've never used Noise Ninja, I can't know. Any truth to that claim?

I'm pretty sure it's the same problem we encountered! Here's what happens...

When shooting with certain lenses on the 5D in AI Servo mode, at high ISO this causes interference. sad.gif
I have NO idea how this even is a possibility but it's true...I did some research and I found out many people have the same problem.

I checked, and it only happens with our 50mm f1.4 lens on the 5D & AI Servo turned on. I heard that other lenses (even some L) cause the same thing!!!

Read here:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos5d/page25.asp (scroll to the bottom)

I don't understand how Canon could allow this to go on. I read that many people have complained to them, but they apparently aren't doing anything about it?!

If this is the same problem as yours, then do as I do...if I'm shooting with the lens that does it...don't shoot with AI Servo sad.gif

Cheers,

Just a quick note, I called Canon support...and even though this issue is spread over the web like crazy...he told me Canon doesn't have this issue in their database, and it's clearly speculation. tongue.gif

Basically he told me I need to send in my camera/lens for them to check/prove this. And says that just because I read something on the web doesn't mean it's a problem...lol
