Tim,

I love my mother. She worked 12 hour days in a factory to put food on the table, to buy me the things I needed. She did get food stamps & medicaid for me. She worked so hard that standing for that many hours made water in her body pool up in her knees.

I hate my father. He pitied himself and even though times were rough, all I remember him doing is buying stereo equipment, records and other crap with the money we needed to live.

Think about the message you are sending to your children.
*Troy*
Chelo,

The quote in your sig line is very ironic in THIS thread. It can be taken out of context to fit exactly what Tim has been saying - in direct contrast to your heartfelt statement above it.

Sorry for the interruption -- but my mind notices silly little things like that.

OK, back to our group help, tough love intervention.

"Aewsome! I'd love to do that. I'll just add in 2 weeks rental fee to your coverage so I can rent it for a week to get used to it, and then use it the week of your wedding."

Tim, I've been where you are/were/definitely will be again. I used to do the same things you're doing. You can't pay your bills, don't see any way to catch up, and then you do. God bring's business or provides some other way, perhaps through donations from friends. The elation from that immediate pressure being lifted is so great that you feel like celebrating. You d that by making a purchase to make you feel good, and it does. You get new gear, you feel like you've accomplished something, but in reality the budget just went south. Again. You're back at the hard place again, with a shiny new camera you now feel guilty about looking at.

I'm going to suggest you take a hard look at your spiritual life. God is *not* a big celestial genie in the sky, waiting to shower you with goodies. You have got to be a good steward of the little you do have, in order for him to bless you with more. In fact, you say God has been good by bringing you money, and i'll challenge you that money is a favortie tool of Satan, and it may, just may, be him brigning money to you, because he knows money management is a weak spot for you. He knows you will manage it back into a hole again. I'm not saying that's what is happening, only that it is a possibility.

Be a good steward. Bank that windfall. Rent's due every month as are all the other bills. Get about 6 months bill money in the bank, then reward yourself by getting that camera without using bill money.

Like others, I am dumbfounded at your logic, and wish it was just you. But you have a wife and children, and that makes me have a concern. If it were just you, well, honestly, I'd write you off.

My logic, great Mark III deal or not (paid way less than 4000, on a used/fixed MarkIII), is appreciative of your sound advice (and everyone).

I suppose paying other bills off before buying the new camera doesn't matter. I'll use the camera this weekend, knock some cash off her and post her up for resale. It wouldn't hurt to pay up on the rent some more.

Thank you OSP for keeping another member sane.

Thanks everyone for the sound advice and help! I honestly didn't try to "get anyone's goat" so to speak. Apparently I did... the truth remains that without OSP'ers we (my family) wouldn't of had that roof over our heads and I'm gonna make sure it stays over our heads.

Have a great day, and thanks again. Mr. Humphrey's post + 1,000,000,000,000

Tim...

Once you go Mark III you don't go back.

Is one of your other cameras ill?

If so, go rent one. If not, return the Mark III and get a full refund from the dealer (less restocking fee). Don't be tempted to try and resell. Mark IIIs are not moving quickly. Else I would have tried to sell mine, and replace it with 4 new 40Ds.

Don't open the box.
Don't do it.

Seriously. Send it back.
Charlotte
I was trying not to beat a dead horse, but there is one thing that really bothers me about this. The couple said "we want a Mark III at our wedding"

My first 2 years, I shot with a 20D and a tamron lens, even now I shoot with a 30D and 5D and the same tamron lens, and clients still think that was impressive. I can't imagine a clients knowing the difference between the Mark II and the Mark III.

Carrying a bigger better camera does not make you a better photographer. It is what YOU do with the camera that makes a difference.

Carrying "God" around does not make you a Godly Man. it is how YOU implement HIM into your life that makes the difference.

I don't really belive that you will sell the camera. You will rationalize it.

You must have gotten a heck of a deal on the camera. I haven't found a used one for less than $4k.

Shane Snider
Tim.. .that's the right decision. But I second what Troy said. Don't mess with it. What if it breaks? Send that sucker back.

And believe me, I know it can get really tempting to go after gear all the time.

I'd love to have a D3. If I wanted, I could go out and buy one. But it's just not the responsible thing for me to do right now. I shoot with a D300 and a D200. The Nikon fairy has visited me on several occassions. I tell him I'm straight and politely turn him down, adding that I would be happy to shoot his wedding. Bada boom... ching.

You should probably try to sit down with a financial planner and get a plan going to pay down your debt. That will be such a huge weight off, man. The worst thing you can do when you start booking jobs is go out and buy a bunch of stuff. Put that money away. I know it's hard.

What on earth did the previous owner do to it, that it needed to be fixed?

As everyone here has basically said... a good camera does not make a good photographer.

I believe everything happens for a reason, and you have to redo lessons until you get it right - God creates events for a purpose, if you will... I would think that God gave you difficulties to see how well you handled, recovered and learned from them - I also now believe that you may find yourself having other difficulties in the future, because youve obviously not learnt how to responsibly overcome them. I hope for your childrens sake that you learn a better way of finding good workable solutions.

Of course, Im happy to be proven wrong in my assessment.

Many original 1DMarkIII's had the back mirror issue and needed to be fixed at Canon. The most up to date firmware helped fix many of the last issues with the bad autofocusing as well. This camera has been through that.

She'll be someone elses toy in a week or so.

Thanks for your help and advice.

Tim, I am ashamed of you. Had I known what was really going on, I would never had suggested buying the camera.

FEI...last night I was at dinner with another photographer from the UK and I got a call from an unknown number and since I am building my business, I didn't want to send a possible client to voicemail. Well I answered it and it was Tim from OSP. I have never talked to Tim before but he called to ask what I thought about the Mark III. Of course, I told him that it is a great camera, which it is.

Last night, I log on to find him bragging about it, which, heck I would too. So I see all these people dawging him and I got a little pissed, then a sweet lady PM'd me and told me the situation, so I removed my negative post to the OSP'ers giving him a hard time. A few minutes later I get two weird PM's from Tim. I truly think the guy might have some mental health problems.

I have seen people be banned from forums for less...but stealing from members here is unacceptable.

Just my .02.

This is how many people in our society think, that is why so many are in the hurt they are with this economy. I once stood behind someone in line at the store paying food with food stamps. Her nails were done, her hair was perfect, clothes were not from walmart, she was also buying a dvd/vhs player. I wanted to say something so bad.

I don't live paycheck to paycheck, and it isn't because I am lucky, I have worked and saved hard my entire life. I haven't had one of those tough times in life because I go without some of my wants. Believe me I know it could happen to me, all it would take would be for my husband or I to be sick for a few months and our savings would be down to nothing, but yet we still have a backup plan, we have land we purchased to cover that type of situation, so we could sell that to keep us afloat for a year or so.

Tim, talk to your pastor or someone and get a long-term realistic plan in order. Don't live off of others. Be a man and take care of your family.

I know this is none of my business, yet when you ask a community for money you make it all our business. This is exactly why I never send money to people like you. I donate my time and money to my local community.

Mike, I pm'd you to thank you for your time on the phone. I didn't mean to interupt your dinner and was appreciative of the minute you gave me.While my eyes have been opened by my fellow OSP'ers about the errors of my ways (my eyes got WAY too big, which is easy with new gear), let me state for the record:

I've never asked for one penny from anyone here. I've only asked for prayer requests. OSP'ers were graticious enough on their own accord to donate money, TWICE, to my family when they were in need.

These "givings" happened twice: Once in July 2007, and Once in January 2008. The first for my daughter's emergency trip to St. Louis Childrens Hospital to evauluate her Epilepsy that we had just found out about and the 2nd to help cover my downpayment on our new rental.

We (my family and I) are so grateful and blessed by those two givings. Above those times, there has never been a hand, willingly sticking out, asking for money. Just prayer... and we all need prayer.

Now I don't have too much reason now to be excited about new gear, which was part of our private conversation. I dont find that to be weird or out of sorts.

Put into perspective now, I can understand fully the error of my ways.

Thanks again for your time last night, I hope you have fun with your new MarkIII. I think I can say, we all can't wait to see some of the new wedding work you'll produce with it.

God bless,

I've never asked the community of OSP for money. But I do agree that I want to be further self sufficient.

I'm taking everyone's advice and wisdom into account. This is just one of many reasons why I love OSP so much.

Wow! I am sad about how this turned out. I saw both threads by Tim about his financial situation and I was bummed that I didn't have the $$ to give him. I guess now I am glad I didn't.

Tim, you have not only hurt yourself but your family as well, because if one thing is certain from this thread, the next time you post about a dire situation in your life, no one is going to help you. So I pray that you seriously learn from this and as others have suggested, talk to someone about financial planning to get you out of whatever financial hardships you are in and teach you how to manage and plan for your $$.

I started shooting weddings in 2006 with a D70s and the 18-70 kit lens. Then I bought the 50 f1.8. 1.5 years later I was able to afford a D200 and a tamron 17-50 f2.8, 1 Sb800 and a Sunpak 120j I got cheap. That was my gear for all of 2007 and up to now. I had about $5K of credit card debt (not business related), and needed to pay $2K to a guy that added a room and a bathroom to our house. All of that has been paid off, and I have enough work booked until the end of June to cover my business expenses and be able to buy a D300, which arrived yesterday. But after 6/28 I won't have any CC debt and my D300 and new Sigma 50-150 f2.8 will be all paid up. The point of all of this is I had been planning for the D300 upgrade for at least 4 months and I followed that plan, so that I could pay off my debt and still get the camera without affecting my providing for family or incurring further debt. I have been asking my wife for an iPhone since my b-day last Sept. but we have been unable to afford it, I have a plan to buy it and I am executing on that plan, and as it goes, I may be able to get if for Father's day or I may not, it's still up in the air. I'd love to have one, but I am not going to sacrifice what my family needs for a toy I want, neither am I going to go into debt to get it hoping I can sell something later and offset the expense.

Finally, since you seem to believe in God, I would suggest you take a good close look at your relationship with Him, because His justice is much more "loving" than those of us here in OSP and I believe you have some serious apologizing here and some serious forgiveness to ask of God. May God be with you and your family.
tmiller
TO EVERYONE:

I'm am truly sorry that I have offended you in any way, shape or form. I chose to use my tax refund and get a great new camera.

I'm sorry for the thread, the big blow ups, everything. I'm not a hateful person, and I do not enjoy causing strife.

Just so everyone knows, it's not fraud to use your tax refund how you see fit. It does not count as gainful employment and while it could have previously been used in a much better way (paying even more bills), I used it to get the camera.

After I get things sorted out with my back to back weddings this weekend, I will attempt to sell it and get most of my money back. Thanks to OSP'ers worldwide, the point has been made.

Many have commented, hundreds probably havn't.

I'm sorry... please forgive me. Let me thank you first though, for being great people and helping me open my eyes to the almost mismanagment of funds. I'm terribly grateful for all the wisdom, business help, and yes... previous gifts of money when it was needed. THANK YOU for helping my family then, and thank you for helping and praying now.

Thank you for your time, I hope your Wednesday is nice whereever you may be.

Of course God's been good and along with this purchase, I'm paying off our car loan. Thanks for all the prayers.

My 1DMarkII becomes my backup body, and my 40D and an Opteka grip is for sale in our buy/sell forum.

God bless you all, and I can't wait to try THIS 1D camera as I love my current!

Hmmm... the part that seriously gets me, and no one else has seemed to point out.... He now has 3 seriously nice cameras. I understand needing a backup for weddings, so I don't begrudge him that. However, I know that a lot of wedding photographers do amazing work with the simple Rebel XT or XTi. Not to mention the XSi that just came out. If a person were 100% serious about putting their family first (and with that, being responsible with their finances) then that person would sell the MarkIII and the MarkII. Get a XTi or XSi for a backup, and keep the 40D for the main. With the money from the sale of those two cameras, I'm sure that would take a huge chunk out of the debts. Or at the very least, food on the table for several months.

This could be frustration talking on my part, however. I have two healthy children, a house to live in, and my husband and I both have steady full-time jobs. However, we live almost paycheck to paycheck trying to pay off student loans, credit card debt, and a second mortgage we acquired in a (stupid) effort to ditch the credit cards. I don't shoot weddings, but the portrait work I do, I make due with a Rebel XT (bought refurbished because that was the only way I could afford it), and a lens that used to be on my old Elan 2e film camera. Did I use the (considerable to us) windfall the government just sent us for the 40D with the IS lens? No. Could I have? You bet, and had money left over.

So, yeah, I'm frustrated and angry that someone who can do a 3 day wedding marathon weekend can't manage to work a regular job, doesn't seem to mind that he lives off of the government, and then drops several grand on something that isn't even close to a need. I don't care if the money came from a client or a tax refund. It still isn't right.

what's more amazing is how the government allows him to be on foodstamps, while he is purchasing these cameras - surely he has to file a return?

Exactly. I have a friend who is a single mom. She had to go through bankruptcy because of her ex. She's living in a pretty sad looking single-wide trailer home and can't even get foodstamps/welfare/daycare assistance. Why? She makes $46.00 too much each month. Yup, $46. Her ex doesn't pay his child support like he should, so there is no help coming from him. And then there are people who abuse the system.

Nuff said.

Tim, I might suggest the Crown Financial http://www.crown.org/ classes. They have regular seminars all over the US, even better they have a 10 week cirriculim taught at many churches across the country.

In short they address;
- Getting out of debt
- Spending
- Saving and Investing
- Budgeting
- Giving
- Earning money
- Training children

You have appearently burned some serious bridges here, so I'd suggest growing yourself so you're able to handle issues on your own.

Tim,

You called me this morning to apologize... all I could say was don't worry about it. It was nice of you to call.

Look- I offer you my forgiveness if you want it. I don't know if the people who sent you money are willing to do the same right now, but here it is- here is my forgiveness and I'm giving it to you.

I Forgive You.

But what good does that do?

Ask God, your family and yourself for forgiveness.

@ Troy: I really believe in my quote, because it gives me hope that with persistence I can achieve the goals that God has set in my path. And the Yes from God, has to be a true Yes from God, reached through meditation and prayer- not some itch to have the latest and greatest. "Making it" doesn't have to involve materialism at all.
But whatever! I'm not so sure we would ever see eye to eye if we met anyway. :|
