Hi everyone it's been a while. I have some questions. Just a few hours ago I received a call from one of my friends who wants me to help her put a portfolio together so she can do some modeling. The problem is that she doesn't have an agent so she has no clue about what she needs in the portfolio and really I don't know either. I'd hate to charge her for something that she'll never be able to use. My only idea is to take basic head shots outside and inside. Do you need model release forms or any other legal documents if it's just for her portfolio? I'm sure that I can figure out all of the shooting stuff but this other stuff kinda makes me nervous because I guess it's new ground for me. Does anyone know what modeling agencies look for and what they need?Oh and if there's anything else please feel free to add your comments. Thanks, AnyaOh and I forgot to add this. How would you charge? I was thinking maybe do it hourly and she pay for the developing and such. what do you think?

Well, I know that you need to showcase a range of looks: athletic, business, casual. I don't know if models still use cards or whether they just depend on websites these days.

She will need a comp card, google for ideas - Head shot, full legnth are important. Tell her not to give money to anyone other than you and the printers for th cards.

So what are comp cards? And who would you use to buy cards or do you ave an example of what one would look like?

Oh and thanks for the no makeup info. I wouldn't have thought of that.

Photographers that shoot for Elite in NY get $375 for a test.

Without knowing what sort of model she is, it is hard to say what she needs in a portfolio.

If she is going to be going to open days at agencies, then a simple headshot will do. If she is sending images in via email. A headshot, straight on mug shot style and profile. Hair down and then pulled back. Full body shots straight on and profile in a bikini. These are basic images that any agency will appreciate. If the model as potential most agencies will cover the cost of a session with a photographer. Of course most agencies will recover that cost from future bookings.

Make up should be Chapstick.

Of course if this is a vanity project, get a whole crew, with a MUA, Wardrobe stylist, property master, and location scout.

Back to reality. You might have her pick up a copy of:

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Being a Model

Sounds funny but it has useful, factual information.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Bill this definitely gets me started. I'm also fortunate I know some one who does acting/modeling so I'm giving him a call tomorrow morning and asking him a few things too so I'm really excited about this new venture. Thanks again!
