I have been wanted to add the Nikon 85mm f/1.8D to my bag for awhile...I have it in my shopping cart right now with B&H and I just wanted to get any last minute opinions on the lens.
I'm pretty sure I've heard good things....but maybe I'm thinking of the 85 1.4

It's my favorite lens. Not the most-used (that would be the 17-55), but my favorite.

NO! Get the 1.4. Every little bit helps in low light!
I would get a 1.0 if I could.

What are you shooting with? I have the 1.8 and shoot with the D200 and soooo covet the 1.4, any low light situations will need the faster glass.

I have the 1.8 (currently on loan to a friend), and I don't like it. I will probably sell it when I finally cave on the 1.4. I'm figuring out my next lens now, but personally I thought it was too slow to focus on my D3 in low light.

Currently, I shoot with the D300 (2 D200's and a D70 in the bag as well). I have the 17-55 2.8, 50 1.4, 105 2.8 and a couple of cheaper backups.
Even with the D300, the extra light would probably help in certain situations. It's a big price difference, but I like to buy glass only once...hmm...

The 85 1.4 is one of the best lenses Nikon makes. Good luck!

1.4 rocks however the 50, 1.4 on a DX camera like the 200 or 300 is actually like a 75 on a full frame and less than half the price. If you have a 300 the resolution can handle a little cropping...... sooooo something else to think about.

Thanks Steve - I already have the 50 1.4

and I do love it. I wanted something with a little more reach, but not as much as my 105....I'm also thinking ahead to when I get a D3 (or whatever the next generation of that camera will be). I want to have some great full frame options. I think I will go with the 1.4...somehow I don't think I'll be disappointed.

I have that lens and love it on my D3. Not so much on the D300.

I have used the 1.8 and 1.4 before and i liked them, but the 1.4 is so much nicer to have with low light, and i have a d300 too. The 1.8 is nice but the 1.4 is sooooo much nicer to have when you need it.
How do you like your 17-55 and 105, I am looking into getting both soon. (17-55 first though)
