Full Version: Expo Disc with bounce flash...

Hi Folks,

I've been hearing a lot about the Expo Disc and wondered what people thought of it. It seems at first glance that it would be best for people shooting ambient lit subjects, which is fine. But how does it work when using flash? I bounce flash almost everything. I do mostly wedding work and am looking for ways to nail white balance and save some time post processing and tweaking color balance.

Thanks.

I use it with bounce flash indoors and both ambient light indoors and out and IMO, it works GREAT. So simple to use and gets my WB just right.

is the technique of using the expo disc to shoot TOWARDS your light source? I'm asking b/c I don't use one but remember reading about it. If so, how do you shoot towards your flash?

That's what I read too, but I called B&H and a few people I know who have them - all you have to do is take the CWB shot aimed where your subject will be. It works great... I was quite surprised.

Here's the official answer:

"When using bounce flash, aim the camera and flash towards the bounce surface (e.g., ceiling) for your custom white balance capture. "

I have a 77mm Expodisc. I have found a massive reading difference between pointing towards the light source and pointing somewhere's else. Obviously; proper use is critical.

I'm a little surprised to hear about it working on bounced flash. Not doubting it, I've just never tried it. Interesting!

I did find that if you call them they have excellent support.
