Full Version: Do I have to re-edit in lightroom whenI transfer files?

Forgive me if this has been asked. I searched and didn't find anything.

We are using lightroom during the wedding doing quick edits on the laptop and using the lightroom slideshow feature during the reception.

My question is, is there a way to transfer my edits over to the desktop when I get home? I'm sure it's easy, however I haven't been able to figure it out.

Thanks!

Write the metadata to sidecar files and the changes will be readable by LR on your desktop when you import the images... just make sure to copy all of the sidecar files to the desktop into the same folder as the RAW images.

Thanks Trevor, I thought I had my lightroom set up that way. I just went to double check and can't find where to set up those settings.

Where do I find that so I can make sure it's set up correctly?

Sorry about the dumb questions, I've been a bit brain fried lately. lol

Or, just right click on the folder in LR, export it as a library (without the images) and then reimport that library into your main LR library. All you'll have to do is reconnect the folder to wherever you've moved the raw files when you get back.

Jen, just call me, I can walk you through this. It's real simple.

Just to clarify, I think Kevin means "Export as Catalog." I just didn't want you to go looking for the word "library." smile.gif

Go to the library grid view. Select all. Then hit control+s. This will write the meta data. Then you can copy the metadata to the desktop. This only works in the library in the GRID view.

I don't think everything gets transfered i this way. E.g., picks, unpicks, rejects. That's why you're better off just exporting the catalog.

Kevin's right (duh, of course he is) if you write the changes to metadata it doesn't transfer picks, unpicks, rejects, history etc.... you want to export it as a catalog/library whatever, and import that file into your main library then re-link the images folder... its really simple and I strongly suggest taking kevin up on his offer for a phone call and he can get you going in a matter of minutes!

ok, quick question.

I want to work off an external drive (that we can see throughout our network). Is it possible for me to make pics, edits, etc from the laptop (directing lightroom to that external drive) and then for Jen to work on the same files, seeing all those edits, when she picks it up on the desktop without having to export a catalog every time.

I guess what we are looking to do, is have those changes available in real time on the network so our workflow can................ well................. flow a bit more smoothly
rowena
I don't know if this answers your question but if you are seeing your external on your laptop and desktop then yes she can work on it but prolly not at the same time you are. Just click on the –––– catalog. I make a catalog for each shoot that way when I'm finished with the job I save it to both external drives I use for archiving as is. It keeps everything in tact and if I need to revisit the job I can go right to it as if I just made changes yesterday. Hope that makes sense, I'm tired.

Rowena, so does this mean, you re-export the catalog each time you make changes or are they auto saved and you just have the lightroom set up to pull from that catalog?

So glad this question has been asked! I've had the same issue, and often wanted pass photos off to my assistant to take home to sort, but then... ahhh.. So I always have her do the work here, using my computer so the info will be saved in lightroom.... but then I am stuck without a 'puter.

A BIG THANKS!!

see that's the same issue we are having. We aren't even wanting to leave the premises, just wanting to work on two separate computers and still be "on the same page" as far as edits pics etc. when the other one picks it up on the other computer.

Right now I do most my work on laptop since I'm on the go all the time. Like I said I make a catalog for each job so right now I'm working on post processing 2 different weddings. Once I'm done with the whole job I export the whole catalog to my archive externals AS IS. I then erase the whole file from my laptop since it's archived safely unto 2 externals. Let say I need to work on a couple of images from that job because they ordered a 20x30 canvas (some wishful thinking here) I then can either just go into one of my externals and click on that particular catalog and wallah everything is as I had it, I can even revert to original if I want, make the changes, then export the one picture for print. I can also copy and paste the whole job catalog back to my laptop if I want to rework a bunch of the images again (as if). The other way I've worked is that I put the files instead of directly on my laptop or desktop I put it on a mini external drive and I use that between the lappy and desktoppy. As long as all my computers have LR I can take that mini to all my computers at all diff. locations and make changes. All changes are w/in the mini. In essence the mini way is much like you'd be doing at home with your external if I'm not mistaken. Does that make sense? It's hard for me to explain things sometimes.

Okay, just realized I overexplained... yes, they are auto saved as you left them.

This is why it would be best to have a separate catalog per job, then you don't have 1 big file with all 10 of your jobs and can't work simultaneously on diff jobs cuz if your computer has the one file open Chris can't open it on his computer cuz you're working on it.
