Can someone tell me, in Dummies format, how to download this? These are the instructions on the website, and I'm pretty sure it's not English...
  1. Unpack the downloaded image into a directory. For example, currently, the following command would unpack into the current directory:
  2. tar xvzf OOo_2.0.4_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz
This will create a source directory with the OpenOffice.org installation. The directory will have a rather long name but be prefixed by "OO...".
  3. su to root, if necessary, and navigate to OpenOffice.org installation directory, the OO... source directory.
Since the default packaging of OpenOffice.org for Linux is RPM, you will likely need to be root to run the rpm command.
  4. cd into the RPMS subdirectory of the source directory.
You should see a lot of rpms here and one sub-directory called "desktop-integration".
  5. Install this new version by typing rpm -Uvih *rpm.
By default, this will install OpenOffice in your /opt directory.
NOTE: See additional installation options and other useful information in the Setup Guide.
  6. Finally, cd to desktop-integration. Depending on your package manager/system, install the appropriate desktop interface.
I have no idea where to start!

What operating system are you installing on. Those look like the Linux RPM version, which i'm sure is not what you want.

http://download.openoffice.org/other.html#en-US

Hit that link and in the middle, find the english version and hit the download link for your system. For windows it's an EXE and for OS X it's a DMG.

I'm not in front of a mac right now so I don't know whats in the dmg, but if it's like anything else, you should be able to just open the dmg, copy the application to the applications folder then eject the dmg.

If windows, run the executable.

Hmmm, looks like I'm downloading the right thing (says MacOSX and ends wiht dmg) but not looking at the right instructions.

What is in the DMG?

Well, I've got "Writer" open right now, so it looks like I did it right. Now I just have to figure out how to find the other features. yltype.gif

You got it. Open Office is pretty cool stuff!

I can't wait to delve into it. I'm loving that this is available for free, and I'm hoping I can figure out how to do a budget. (It's been years since I used a spreadsheet!) I have to thank Trevor for recommending it. thumbsup.gif

I've only been using a Mac for a few weeks, and I'm still having trouble finding my way around, so hopefully it won't take me too long to utilize all of the O.O. features.
