Full Version: Hand Strap or Neck Strap?

Hello all! Just curious, do you use a hand strap (like DJ) or a neck strap? I personally used a neck strap in the beginning but recently changed to a hand strap but find it very difficult to swap lenses quickly, so I am thinking of going back to neck strap.

Thanks!

I use a neck strap, but don't have it around my neck most of the time. When it isn't around my neck, I usually have it wrapped on my hand, just in case I drop the camera.

Neck strap...I am usually shooting with two camera's...

i have neck straps on my bodies, so i've been wearing a primary body on my neck and just storing the other one in my bag when not in use. i don't like canon's neck strap cuz it causes irritation wearing it all day. I could use a more comfy option

Neither! Go Black Rapid. You won't go back...

(I use two R-straps, an itty bitty waist pack, and a pocket rocket. I can zoom about with this setup...)

I use the neck straps because I like to shoot with two cameras. I am interested in switching over to the R-strap though. They are a little pricey, and in order to work in a two camera setup, you really need two of them. However, they are very comfy, and they give you instant, easy access to you cameras. The setup is a little different since it connects to the tripod mount, but I would highly recomend trying one out!

Neck strap usually wrapped around my hand (?)

I guess it doesn't limit me to holding it all the time, but I hate wearing it around my neck unless I absolutely have to.

Hey Mike, I see you're a Mark II owner as well. I actually have a hand strap and a neck strap on both my MIII and MII. BUT! That chicky Paige E is messing with my mind AGAIN.... Never heard of this crazy R-Strap. Hmmmmm, interesting. That girl Paige, I tell ya, she's the bomb.

I love my hand strap!

For those who like the hand straps or want to try/buy one, I've got a Nikon hand strap for sale.

I'm all about the neck straps.
Josh
I switch between the two every few months. Right now I'm using the hand strap. The R-Strap sounds intriguing...

I loved my hand strap, but just switched to the 5d last week (no grip), so I am trying to get used to the neck strap...

Bottom line... the neck strap is more practical but you look WICKED COOL with the hand or no strap.

Lets invent a quick disconnect so there can be both. Many times I want both. The strap dangles and is distracting, you ball it up in your hand and it gets in the way of the controls...need both during a wedding sometimes.

Sorry Mike, that's what I meant, Mark III. Me too.
JimCook
I use both. When shooting hand strap. When carrying camera neck strap used over the shoulder.
tmiller
I use both, on my 1DMarkII and just the handstrap on my 40D and grip. (backup body)

It's simple to have a quick release as well, if you want... 1 Op-tech quick release pro strap (cussiony, really nice) and you've got the handstrap.

It just works. I like the idea of the Rapid Strap, but someone who I trust, respect and shoot 30 weddings a year isn't sold just yet.

He's testing em out and says they wrinkle your shirt horribly, and sometimes you've gotta stay looking nice.

Just an opinion.

I used 2 R-straps on my MKIII and 5d on my last e session. So far I love it.. I would recommended to anyone..

The only complained that I have is shooting in vertical position.. the r-strap attached to the bottom on the tripod screw area.. this makes it hard to shoot in vertical position..

Thanks! That's a good point.

I hadn't heard of the r-strap before this thread, and I'm thinking of getting one to try. I shoot about 80-90% vertical shots, though, and I was wondering about that. I usually don't leave a quick release tripod plate on my camera for that same reason.

Currently, I'm strapless. I've yet to find a strap I like. I like the idea of a handstrap, but you'd almost need two...one for horizontal use and one for vertical.

Crap! That is awesome. I'm ordering one to try out.

I'm a neck strap kind of guy. I'll wrap it around my wrist 2 or 3 times to go into a more handheld shooting style but still have some protection from just dropping it. This R Strap thing though looks like something I would use a lot.

Cheers,
Zack

I really got tired of dropping cameras all the time...so I just went ahead and crazy glued one to each hand. It's sure hard to type this post using my nose though...and I haven't quite figured out how to change lenses (or pee) but I've got lots of extra money to throw at a solution to those challenges...

You may need to hire a personal assistant, but it will be worth it for your business (and your kidneys) in the long run

Mark & Zack -- You'll loooove it!

I've had zero issues with vertical shooting and I'm a very heavily vertical shooter. Truthfully, I was nervous about letting go of my camera to hang at my side but Jordan at TriCoast made me try it. And I cannot tell you the stress it took off of my wrists the moment I let go. Love it! As to the wrinkling thing... you boys may be on your own... I shot with two of them over a blouse in Mexico though and had no issues. But I never look perfectly pressed at the end of shooting a wedding anyway.

(Do be sure to secure the clip closed though. BR has a safety tube they send now. I use the old fashion gobbs of gaffer tape method.)
