I have $500 to donate to a worthy cause. I am thinking that I am going to give it to my local humane society. I am wondering, what other animal related worthy causes are there out there that I should consider like Peta or ASPCA?

Oddly enough, one of the power window motors went out on my BMW yesterday and that's almost exactly how much it costs to fix it. Want my address? wink.gif

I need moneys...

I don't have animals, but I do have kids... smelly ones.

Donate it to your local children's shelter, short term women's shelter, homeless mission. PETA, HSUS, etc are scams that do more to advance their cause and pocketbook than the causes they pretend to benefit.

I'm very active with the St. Jude Hospital and Ronald McDonald House - are you sure you want an animal charity and I can't convince you to send your money to St. Jude instead?! wink.gif

I did a project for The Shade Tree here in Vegas recently and they have an animal shelter attached called Noah's Arch shelter. Its the only one of its kind so far in the country. It allows battered women to stay in a shelter and not loose their pets or be left behind to be abused. Very cool and I hope it catches on nation wide. Just an idea I am sure they would appreciate it.

I vote for your local shelter, especially if they are a no-kill shelter. My little guy was only there for three months, but some are there for over a year. That is a lot of food and vaccinations to administer. My local shelter is absolutely fantastic, and they work so hard to make life better for these little fellas. They even put in a dog park to encourage folks to come over and volunteer and interact with the animals.

I agree that St. Jude is a great cause, but if you want to donate to animals, then I've heard this is a wonderful place...http://www.oldfriendsequine.org/

It keeps it local here in KY, and in light of the recent Derby tragedy, seems especially appropriate.

You're a good egg Jim! smile.gif

Edit--I just noticed they're in Georgetown! I always thought they were in Versailles.

There's NILMDTS, too, if you want it to be photography related.

Hmmm.... fix a bmw, support smelly kids, help animals.... This is a tough decision...

Thanks all for the suggestions. They are all mostly great ideas!!! However I want to donate to something local and based on the feedback I think I will be leaning towards the local animal humane society as usual.

Also thanks for making me aware of all of the awesome charities going on around the country. This is a great place to live!!!

Yes they are--- I forgot about them. That may be a good place. Thanks for reminding me.

Or you could give it to someone with an abnormally large mouth to feed.

Not many will get that -- but the important people will! thumbsup.gif

Yay! This makes me happy :) Definately donate to a local shelter...(although you should check and see if you have a no kill shelter and donate there.) If you love a particular breed you could find a breed specific rescue to donate to.

OR, if you want it to be animal related but not a shelter, you could consider a local Search and Rescue group. I am training my dog for SAR and so I know the hard work that is put in by the members. There is ALOT of expense too - and it all comes out of the members' pockets unless it is donated.

Either way, it makes me happy to see someone donating for our furry friends :)

There are some really great non-shelter rescue organizations around the country that rescue pups about to be killed in kill shelters and also which buy dogs at auctions from puppy mills in an attempt to help break that cycle. There are a number near us which take in pets from families where an older member has died leaving behind an animal, or something to that effect and they foster them/find them homes/get them treatment if needed, etc.

But honestly? If you want to do something truly pet/furry-friend-ly, donate to a local/regional spay/neuter program that offers low-cost or free "fixes." In the long run, this is one of the best "investments" in terms of pets.

I know this isn't animal related, but if you are familiar with Cystic Fibrosis then you may want to consider donating to the foundation. My 4-year-old daughter, Piper, has had a rough road, as have many children that are dying far too young to this terrible lung disease. May is National CF awareness month and research is coming SO far...I pray my daughter makes it to see the eradication of this disease. Just a thought...they are a wonderful cause!! I'm sorry it's not animal related, but I'm always trying to find a reason to fight for my little one!!

There is a picture of her on my blog: http://www.courtneyfriesblog.com

God Bless and I know your donation will be greatly appreciated to ANY organization you decide on out there!

I could kiss you. I love animals.

You made my day. : )

Check this out...its not local but VERY IMPORTANT AND SAD. I bawled when I watched iit. (I really like places where the money that is donated could not possibly go to paying employees to work there, at Angels gate the money goes to care for the abused and neglected animals)

This is from Brenda Acuncius' blog:
QUOTE
I was watching Oprah the other day about her Hall of Fame guests when this clip came on about a lady in upstate New York that runs a program called Angel's Gate. It's a hospice for terminally ill animals and abused animals that have no where else to go. She believes that every animal should die being loved and with diginity and I can't agree more. We are the ones that domesticated animals and yet we let them down leaving millions to be euthanized each year.

Please check out Oprah's Story and please watch the video. It is tough to see....I cried so hard I threw up but sometimes things just have to hit you in the gut to make you pay attention.

Some of these dogs are from puppy mills that were basically tossed on the streets because they couldn't sell them because they have malformations. Others are abused and left for dead. For example, the puppy she is holding in the photo is one that police found when they went to a home to arrest some people for abuse. They found her unconscious behind the couch due to shaken puppy syndrome. She is now paralyzed and it's sad because that is all she knows.

Maybe you could donate it to me so that I could pay someone to take a picture to replace my avatar. smile.gif

That may be the best idea in this thread, actually. laughing.gif laughing.gif laughing.gif

In all seriousness, I think it's awesome, Jim. Whatever charity you choose will be a great choice - and animals probably deserve it more than most people do smile.gif

I'm a big fan of St. Jude Hospital. We donate a lot of money to them every year and are actually copying an idea that one of my daughters school friends did for her birthday last year - instead of gifts for my daughters birthday party with her school friends we're going to ask that people make a monetary donation to St. Jude. Face it, my daughter doesn't need any more junk, she'll still get MORE than enough gifts from family, and I'd much rather see that money spent on childhood cancer research than on Polly Pockets, Littlest Pet Shop toys, and other random things she'll lose interest in after an hour.

corporations and people give to people causes all the time, animals never get enough. donate to a shelter, they havent asked to be there.......

I *love* this idea. My husband and I have talked about doing similar things with our kids for their birthdays (okay, future kids since we don't have any yet) and encouraging them to pick charities, and as they get older, research them and so forth. Idealistic, maybe (and perhaps premature since no kids yet), but we're hoping to instill in them not only the ability to manage money, generally, but to understand the ideas of spending money on fun things (within reason), invest, save, and be generous/charitable with time and money. Now if only my dogs could earn some money for us to be charitable with wink.gif

Jim, take a look at Noah's Ark here in Locust Grove, GA. (You said local, and it's local to me.)

They care for both children and animals. The children benefit from the animals and the animals benefit from the children so you don't have to choose one or the other - you are helping both!

We got our dog, Dora, from them. (Forgive the logo. This one is for sale as stock, don't want to ruin my income by posting it somewhere for free.)
