Hey all.
Got my new MacBook Pro yesterday. Hollar.
My Sony Viao is such a piece of crap and it's only a year old. I couldn't even run slideshow on it, it's so bad.
My question is how can I back up my e-mail from my PC? Is there somewhere on-line that I can do it? I would love to just transfer it but don't know if this is possible.
I need to save it somewhere before I get rid of the PC.
I'm not a techie, I barely know how to turn this MacBook Pro on so any advice would be great!
Can the Mac Store do this? Best Buy?
Thanks!

Congrats on the switch!

What program are you using for mail? Outlook? Outlook Express? or ?
FWIW that's why I use gmail for my everyday mail program, I have an offline backup, but all 12600 emails I've gotten in the last couple years are all in the same place and quickly searchable through gmail.

I detailed the mail migration steps
in this post if you would like to review it. Personally I wouldn't trust Best Buy or the Apple store with my company's email...

ok, time to get geeky up in here.
re-setup your email account on your pc as an imap server instead of the POP protocol many of us tend to use. using the imap protocol keeps your stuff on the mail server so you can view your inbox from whatever computer you're on.
so you've got your account set up as imap, copy all the messages on your computer into a folder of your email account, and then set up your mac mail similarly, and it should work.
ok, i probably made very little sense, but that's one way to do it!

I started using gmail as my email service earlier this year and I love it. Then you will never need to worry about how to migrate mail from one computer to another. Something to consider.

I did just sign up for gmail and used DJ's video he sent out. What great timing. I was on 'Windows Mail'.

'Windows Mail'? Is that a Vista App? Look and see if there is a way to export your mailbox to a file. It maybe say export or migrate in the drop down menu...

I was just at the Mac store getting a mouse and they said they will transfer all/any files for free for the first 14 days. Sweet!
BTW-I can't seem to get the gmail to work properly. I wonder what I"m doing wrong?

make sure you enable POP/IMAP in your gmail settings online. this needs to be done so apple mail can connect to the gmail server.
