Hello All.

I am curious to know some input about the new 24 in. iMAC's. Do they perform well for PS3 and for photo printing? Does the screen perform well for monitor/color calibration?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

you mean the NEW one that just came out today? i'm sure they will work great. the 24" now runs 3.06 ghz and supports up to 4gb of RAM - while I'd prefer more RAM i think it's not a bad move... just don't buy extra RAM from apple... buy it from http://www.transintl.com

if you have any other mac questions feel free to post in the mac/windows section of the forums or shoot me a PM. i'll be happy to assist you.

The only problem with the new, aluminum imac's is that damn glass front screen. It's WAAAAAAAAAAY too glossy for my taste, impossible to edit on accurately and color calibrate. The speed and graphics upgrade is nice but to me, these new imacs aren't useful for editing. I really wish they'd make a non-glossy screen for these then they'd totally rock!
MeeksDigital
oh yeah, i forgot about those DAMNED glossy screens! if you can, buy something other than an imac for editing... the reflections off the glass screen will drive you up the wall. you can pick up a NIIIICE refurbished mac pro and a 23" cinema display, which is thankfully glossy... and they will be for a long time hopefully.

I wouldn't recommend doing major editing on an LCD -- get a CRT and plug it into your iMac. It'll be much easier. You probablly don't want the 24" one in that case.

does chip merchant warranty their RAM for life? i'll have to check them out... but I like transintl because they're in CA and I get stuff super-quick from them.

I don't know if the new iMacs would be good for editing....here are some articles you might find interesting.

yep, then there's always that. another reason to stick with the cinema displays. don't get me wrong, the new imacs are beautiful.... they just may not be the best choice for editing at the moment.

Thanks everyone. That is what I needed to know.

The 20" screens we're inferior on the first generation of the alluminum iMac with glossy screens...i don't know if this recent rev addressed the cheaper lcd on the 20" model. The 24" LCD's are much better. They are not cinema displays, but they are very good.

You could always get the iMac and a second 23" cinema display. You will be able to extend your desktop onto it, and with lightroom 2.0, you will be able to take advantage of the dual monitor support. You can do your main photo editing on the cinema display, then use the iMac's monitor for thumbnails and other editing controls/toolbars. I'd assume you can do something similar with photoshop.

Taking this approach, as suggested above, you could probably get away with the 20" model if you weren't going to use that monitor for photo editing. I'd get the 24 anyway though, if it's within what you are willing to spend.
