Hi all,
I want to start using gels on my flash to balance
color temp. Am on the B&H website and there are
so many choses. I want to be able to balance
tungsten and sunset photos. This is the one I think I need" Rosco Cinegel #3407 Filter - RoscoSun CTO - 20x24" Sheet" need a little
help, not sure if this one is correct. I also see
1/2 CTO and not sure what to get. Thanks in advance

This really simplified it for me! You're right, CTO is for balancing tungsten. For sunset, you may want a quarter or half CTO. Also useful is window green for fluorescent lighting. And then you can just play with the other colors!

Okay thanks.

Okay so it sounds like getting a few of them is a good idea. At $6.50 it will be okay. Thanks

I've read that some use the gel sample pack for their flash - can anyone chime in on this?

Look at mpex and strobist. Great buy over there.

hmmmm why not shoot RAW and adjust color temp to your liking?

There are some scenes with complex lighting where even RAW color temp can't match the whole scene. So you gel your flash to the lighting of the room so that it is equal across the whole scene.

I have tried that. I wanted to be able to attach velcro to the gel for easy use on my strobe (that way you can store the gel on the strobe when you're not using it, rotate it to cover the flash head quickly when you're ready to), but the gel wasn't big enough for that, so I had to just tape it to the flash... wasn't workin out so great!

I use the Rosco sample pack for on-camera flashes. Just pop the wide-angle cover over the filter to hold it in place. They're the perfect size.

For my heavier lights I just buy the full sheet.
