Does anyone use ring lighting on weddings? Hows the catch light?

I've seen it a lot in fashion work but the eyes were touched up. I haven't come across any wedding pixs yet where it is used as I'm just looking into it this week

I'm looking at the Gary Fonf ring light. http://www.garyfong.com/ringlight041408.html

I use the hell out of mine....

go to leah and david on my blog and scroll down to the latter half of the shots against the brick wall.

I use a different setup that is way more powerful ( and much more cumbersome) than that of what gary is selling.
(I think his is a modification of what they use for dental applications which has been out for many many years.)

hope this helps.

Thanks! Beautiful images on the blog.

That helps. I'll keep looking into the ring flash until I find some good reviews on a system. I've also heard that Alien Bees carry's something but I have't looked into it yet.

I really like the look of some of them, but I think those little ones that just go on the lens itself aren't powerful enough for what I want to use it for. But then again, some of those ring lights can be well pricey...so I'm still looking...

Alien Bees does have a GREAT ring light, that is much more affordable than others. If it's something you aren't going to use every day, the Alien Bees unit is super easy to use and worth the money. If you are going to do some heavy duty usage, save up and invest in a pricier one.

Hey Jenna...I didn't know you were on OSP....sorry, no advice about the ring light, but it's good to see you here.

Not cheap compared to a do it yourself job but I saw this awhile back and it looked promising.

Id like to see some samples of that used when it does come out.
I can already tell you that I don't like that it loses -1 full stop of light, which could affect the distance potentially that you can shoot it at.

I do like that it looks more portable than true ring lights.

this ringlight is what I have in my goodie bag...

A ring light like this is small and underpowered for the look you are accustomed to seeing in fashion magazines. These are designed for clinical and forensic photography.

If you want the ring light look you will probably want something at least as big as the Alien Bee.

Griffin,

Do you hand hold that or use a tripod. If you have handheld it, is it a pain in the butt or reasonably easy to manage?

Thanks

oh, nice price difference between gary fongs and alien bees but better to get it right the first time than to want to upgrade later

Jenna,

Ring lights can add another element to your portfolio. It truly can create some cool images. Gary's ring light is more for macro use. Thing bugs, flowers, little green army men. With this size flash, you will burn through batteries and it won't be good for much more than half body shot. I have used a Sunpak DX12, which looks very similar to Gary's, in terms of size.

The Alien Bees model is the cheapest "good" one around. The AB is a larger and it isn't something you will be walking around with, but I image these will be for cool portraits.

I'm sorry I don't have any brides to show you yet. I will say they look great when guys have colored vests and the brides have good tans.

I seen this ring flash on the strobist and thought it may be a good idea
for weddings. Check it out and see what you think.
