Full Version: A Moment Like This
So, I haven't actually launched my photography business yet. I've got a facebook page and stuff up on flickr though so people can see my stuff. I'm trying to get a website going and I'm doing lots of work to beef up my portfolio. I guess word is spreading quickly though in my little area of the world because I was out last night at a big venue in Orlando and a man came up to me that I had never met. (He was a friend of a friend) and he introduced himself to me and started to tell me all about how great my photography was and how much he loved everything I've done and. (He went on for like a minute while shaking my hand continually.) I was so blown away because that's never happened to me. I felt so legit! HaHa. All day today I've been walking around with all this newfound confidence. I think in the story of my career I'm going to have to always come back to this one night as one of the foundational events.

My moment was shortly after I decided to give this thing a try. I had only done 1 full wedding and I did b&w for another family member's wedding because her photographer couldn't do b&w. (This was in the film days) I had a website and some business cards and I was starting to get the word out that I was doing this.
I had a bride contact me. She lived in Florida, but would be in Ohio 1 week in August to plan most of her May wedding. She agreed to meet with me. We met at a McDonald's (whose air conditioning was broken that day..very hot!). I was still in my business casual clothes from my real job at the time. I had 4x6 proofs in a Wal-mart photo album to show of my work. And it was only 1 wedding. She came in with her Mom, 2 bridesmaids and 2 friends. We talked for awhile. I went over my packages with her...and she booked my biggest package (at the time $4500!) on the spot with a $1000 retainer!
That was the moment that I felt that I was legit! Looking back now...I can't believe I booked anyone that way, but I guess my confidence was enough to convince her. I was grinning ear to ear that night!
