Full Version: Soft boxes that work with speedlights

Anyone using a soft box with their smaller flash guns (550/580, SB800, 285 etc)? I'd like something that would allow me to do at least half body portraits.

I was thinking of buying a softbox and then trying to make my own ring mount that would hold two flashes for double the power into the box.

Any advice? brands? model numbers?

Thanks!

Hi! I guess you can make your own attachments for the Soft boxes for 2 units... I have a Lastolite for one of my SB's... so far I tried it with an SB24, and 26... Works great! I think is a 16 inch. box...

I believe somewhere in the Strobist site, somebody made an attachment for 2 units, but not for a softbox...

Why don't you just get a couple of shoot-through umbrellas?

Check this ONE out.

This is the one I am getting, and here you can see how Neil Cowley uses his.

I have had good experiences with the Morris mini softbox. It comes with the speedring and works great on my SB800 flash. $60
I also use a really small micro apollo by westcott. $35

I prefer shoot through umbrellas on location because they fold nicely. I like the Westcott Halo because it prevents flare.

You are supposed to put the whole flash inside the umbrella. But, to do so, you have to position the flash so close to the umbrella that you don't get much spread. I just use the velcro on the umbrella opening to stick it to the sides of the flash head. It doesn't seal tightly, but it doesn't need to. Works great!

Thanks all. I found a photo of what I think I'd like to try.

I've seen a lot of the smaller soft boxes but I'd like to try and power something that is in the 25-35 inch size. I might just end up with something like the one that Bryce posted though it gets some bad reviews in that you can't point it down very easily. Not sure if that would be a problem for me or not.

Anyhow thanks for the suggestions!
