Hey all! I currently use a MacBook Pro for all of my proofing and everything else, but I would love to get an external display to do more accurate printing and for album design, since I hear the MBP monitor can't be calibrated as well as an external display. Does someone have suggestions on an external display, or what to look for in a good display? I would love something that's fairly affordable, but I know I may have to spend more to get something great. Thanks! smile.gif

My dad wants to send me this:

EIZO.

You should give the guys at CHROMiX a call about the pros and cons of the different models. They are really helpful.

I'd stay away from the Apple Cinema Displays. Over the years we've used ours (we have two 20" ACDs) I've noticed a pretty sizable color shift on the older one (~3 years). A photographer I know uses an EIZO and has amazing results -- though I suspect some of that is because he's pretty awesome as well wink.gif

Is there anything out there that is good without a huge price tag?

I *heart* my apple cinema displays calibrated bi-weekly of course.

I also highly recommend the Eizo if you can afford one ... it would be well worth it. Since you plan to use the monitor for very critical color work and print output, you want the best you can afford.

I have the 22" version of the Samsung you linked to, and I am not very pleased with it. And I do calibrate all our monitors here since we are doing pretty critical work for our clients. I cannot use the Samsung for client orders. I was especially disappointed in it's calibration capabilities.

Robin has a 22" Dell that, surprisingly (to me) not only calibrates well, but is very good! And I know the Dell's are highly rated, get great reviews, and are more affordable.

Lacie CRT's have always been a favorite among artists, designers, and photogs, and there more expensive LCD's are very good.

The best costs...

I'll second Mr. Steffine and say that I've heard [surprisingly] good things about the Dell monitors. It pains me a little to say that since the ACDs are prettier, but since I've already had to resend a few print orders thanks to a shift on the left side of our older ACD (calibrated regularly with an Optix Pro XR).

Eizo is pretty much the best LCD. ACDs are pretty low in quality from what I've experienced and heard from people in the graphics biz...

Thanks guys! That gives me some good things to go back to my dad with. It's always easier to reason when I have some good info. smile.gif

you and me both man. i love my dual 23" displays on the mac pro, and the 20" is quite nice too! i've packed them across the country in hard cases, they're super reliable and color-accurate, and EASY TO CALIBRATE. but then again they're apple. they just work thumbsup.gif

I am also looking to upgrade my monitors. I agree that Dell monitors has good reviews.

Can you tell me specifically which specific Dell models you recommend? I am looking at dual 22s" or 24s"....

Thanks!

Id choose Lacie or Eizo. - well I did choose Eizo (helps I have access to reseller pricing)

Seriously, you will probably spend more time on your computer than shooting. You wouldnt buy a $200 PnS camera to shoot a wedding so dont use a cheap monitor to edit your beautiful photos!

Eizo also are one of the few monitors that has a 5 year warranty (+they tell you how many hours they've been running tongue.gif - mines been on for 1448 hours now)
