I rented two lenses and they came in today! I've always been a zoom lens gal, but I rented the 135 2.0L and the 85 1.8 because I needed the speed for tomorrow night, and I think i'm in love. Super sharp, super easy to use. I may be a convert!

Good thing you didn't rent the 85mm f/1.2 - that is an awesome lens too... :-D
What I like about the 85 f/1.8 and the 135 f/2 is that they are pretty inexpensive for the quality of the lens.
Which one will show up in your permanent camera bag first?

I think they both might end up in my bag very soon! I'm just trying to figure out the logistics of shooting weddings with primes as opposed to zooms.
Currently, I shoot one camera, and switch lenses between my 24-70 and my 70-200. I'm trying to determine if its feasible to be a one camera gal with primes.
If so, what do you all recommend as the winning combo for weddings? My current thought is:
24
50
85
135
That covers from wide to medium to long. But it'll mean that I might potentially be switching between 4 lenses.
What do you guys do?

I recently gave my husband my 24-70, and kept my 70-200.
For primes I bought
85mm
24mm
50mm
I also have the 15mm fisheye and the 100mm macro.
I thought I could use the 50mm for group portraits but it sucks. What is everyone else using? I hate to take my 24-70 back from my husband - he was so happy to get it.

Personally I dont see how it is possible to shoot a whole wedding with primes only. I like zooms for the flexibility but I guess if you need a faster lens, there comes a time when you must use primes.

Ahhhh, I was just trying to find a place to rent some lenses in FW. No cigar though. Duh, it didn't even occur to me to have them shipped. Where did you rent them from? I have a HUGE project this week that I would have loved some nicer glass.
BTW, I have the 85 1.8 and I would love it so much more if I had a 5 D, but on my 40 D it's not full frame so I can hardly ever get back far enough. (So I start out shooting with it and after about getting run over by backing into the street, I have to pop on my 50.)

Hi Betsy,
I actually rented mine from LensProToGo after reading some awesome reviews about them here on OSP. I talked with Paul yesterday morning because I needed these lenses overnighted to me and he couldn't have been nicer and easier to work with! I talked with him yesterday mid-morning/early afternoon and I had the lenses in my hand today by 6:00pm! I'll definitely be using LensProToGo again!

Paul is the man! I rented the 85 1.8 from his two weeks ago along with some others. He knew I was leaving the country a day after the lens were to arrive. He sent them 4 days early just to make sure I had them and for the weekend!

The only time I use a zoom is during the ceremony, the 70-200. And that's because the bulk of my weddings are in churches and I need it then. Otherwise all I use is the 50 1.2 (I'd sell my children before I'd sell this lens.Kidding! (kind of) the 24 1.2 and the 35 2.0.
So yes, it's entirely possible. I just zoom with my feet

i have the 15 fish, 24L, 50 1.4, 60 macro, 85 1.8, 135L 2.0 - this is where my shootsac comes in handy.
i have done weddings with these and i have no problems.

Now that I've switched to Nikon, I'm learning about their lenses, but I have to say that the Canon 135/2 was by far my favorite Canon lens. That thing is sharper than a stainless steel razor and the AF is crazy fast. Not to mention the great bokeh.

Here is what I've been using...
First Camera: 5D w/24 - 105 f/4L IS I like the extra length over the 24 - 70.
2nd Body 40D: I switch between a 70-200 f/2.8, a 50 1.2 (which on the 40D is = to an 80mm f/1.2) or sometimes I'll add the 17 - 40 f/4 for some wide perspective.

Also love the 135 2.0 -- great lens. The 50 1.2 is another amazing lens.
But the thing you'll have to be more careful of with all primes and one body...you'll probably want to stock up on sensor swabs!!

The 24L rocks. The 85L is awesome during different parts of the day. The 135 works really well on the 5D. I also love using the 70-200 for the ceremony. I am finding that during the ceremony I am using the 24...the 85...and the 70-200. Then when the reception hits I put the 70-200 away and replace it with the 135/fish/and the 24-70. This is all depending on the venue and the lighting that I want to use.
If you were to only pick one lens I would go with the 24L if you are shooting on a 5D.

I love my primes.

Chiming in a little late, but I also am a huge fan of primes. I had the 50mm 1.8 and 1.4 and the 85mm 1.8 when I rented (From Paul, of course) the 24mm 1.4L. LOVE AT FIRST CLICK. Seriously. paul extended my rental for 2 weeks, and I ran out and bought on the very day that I returned it. It has barely left my camera since. great on the 40D creamy, creamy bokeh. i am going to rent the 135 2.0L next, and I'm afraid I will fall in love with that legth, too.

Hi Mike,
Your legs become the zooms for your primes and you get a work out at the same time I only use my 70-200 IS during the ceremony and then it's all primes the rest of the day.

Yeah, guess I am just weird. Maybe I should rent some more primes before my next wedding.
