I was trying to think of a way to launch showit web slideshows without taking my visitors away from my blog site. I didn't want to embed because in this ADD world I feel that if it still on my webpage, they would be tempted to scroll back up and get distracted from what I want them to focus on. Enter lightbox. I'm playing around with it right now and want to know if it works in everyones browsers. Does anyone get scroll bars? Does it look okay in the window? What do you think? Pro's? Con's? Thanks for anyones feedback!

You can check it out by going to this page on my blog, scrolling down and viewing the slideshow.

Thanks for your time!

Safari; no scroll bars; looks perfect in the window.

My thoughts: I see your point about people getting distracted, but as a *viewer* I don't like things that take over my webspace. smile.gif

When I clicked on it (Firefox on a mac) it loaded lightbox - but I couldn't see anything. I heard the music but the box just stayed black...It loaded in Safari though without any problems...

Lindsey! Thanks for your input! Do a lot of you others feel the same way?

Uggg... this is definitely the input I need. It works in Firefox for Windows but I haven't tried it on Firefox on my Mac yet. I'll try it and see if I get the same results. Thank you!

It's not showing up on Firefox on my Mac as well. And it's showing a vertical slidebar in Safari. Weird. Anyone have IE6? It works fine in IE7.

Rich - I'm on IE (don't know what version sorry) and I noticed a couple things. First, I did get this wierd scrollbar on the far right - if I tried to scroll up or down, it would just make the show shake, if you know what I mean.

Another thing I noticed is that if I wanted to stop watching the slideshow, X'ing out would take me completely out of your blog as well. You might not want that!

Fun slideshow though!

Thanks for your screenshot! Very helpful! By the look of your screenshot, you're using IE6. Which is a good thing but doesn't solve everything.
I'm trying to link it directly to an "embedded" version of the slideshow that shows only the slideshow and no title. But it's complaining when I link directly to the swf file and telling me that it "failed to load showit.xml". It's obviously trying to find the showit.xml file in my blog directory -- which it's not. Trying to figure out how to solve this one.

Okay... I edited it so it doesn't show the title. I like the look of it more now. And it shows the same on IE7, Firefox for PC, and Safari. Now to get this thing working in Firefox for Mac! If anyone knows what may be going on, please let me know!

Rich - I thought this was cool. The only thing I would try to change would be to have a different image to click on to do the slide show (rather than the black show-it image with the arrow in the center).

Firefox.
No scrollbar.
No issues at all.

Love it! I love that it stays on your blog page and shades out the background. That makes the background not distracting at all in my opinion.

Familiar topic...still haven't figured out what I am doing yet! smile.gif

I'm glad you posted this! I've been thinking of doing something like this with my blog and its great to see a nice POC. Thanks Rich!

I do something similar to link them out of my client gallery page. Take a look:

Rich, I think its probably awesome once it works everywhere, but I'm not getting a slideshow. Just a grayed out screen, and a slick intro to a box where the show should play, but then no show. It looks killer and I think it'll be awesome once it can work for everyone.

Well as I write this, the music just started playing, but no images. It took at least 3 minutes since I clicked on the button for the music to play. I'm on a cable connection.

Hope you can work this out, I think it'll be awesome!

I'm on Firefox for Mac and Safari isn't even loading your page at all..

I figured out what the problem is going on. It apparently is a bug with Firefox for the Mac. It apparantly has trouble with CSS Opacity and Flash Transparency. I found this article about it. Now I just have to implement the solution and I'm no good with javascript...
Rich Smith
About flippin' time!

After about 3 days of pulling my hair out -- trying everything in the book and pouring over the code, I think I finally figured it out! If anyone is interested in knowing what the heck was going on, let me know and I'll post the solution. Let's just say that it's a weird bug within Firefox for Mac. I'm pumped that's now working in all platforms and browsers now! If you haven't seen it yet, go to:

Scroll to the bottom and click on the slideshow!

Again, CC is appreciated.

how did you do it, if you dont mind sharing?

Love it! I'm on firefox on a mac.

p.s. I would really love to see some sort of tutorial for this, maybe on cutframe? Is that a possibility?

I don't mind at all letting you know!

I used a wordpress plug-in called Shadowbox. Although there are several different varieties, I love the animation and the smoothness of how this works. If you try to install it but are having problems, let me know. I'm pretty much an expert on this plug-in now!

Thanks, Kent! Thickbox is another one that has MUCH smaller code but of course sacrifices the bells and whistles. It also comes with the Firefox Mac bug fix.
DDuggan
can you post your code for us to see? The link means very little to me, but I can figure the code if I see it.
