Yes, I really am switching to Canon. I've heard that an update to the 5D is most likely right around the corner, so I'm curious which camera is best to get right now. I definitely want the 5D (or it's updated version as my main body). My question is, should I get a 40D now and then move that to my backup once the update is announced and I get that, or should I go with a 5D now and then get the upgrade and have two 5D's (or equivalent) in my bag? I'm a little torn and it's about a $1000 difference. Thanks!

May I ask why are you switching? What would you do if there was no upgrade coming?

I would check around to see if anyone on OSP is selling a 5d. I remember seeing one for 1300 in the used section. I would definatley wait for the 5d successor to come out before buying anything new.
If you definately need a body in the meantime why not go to Adorama's overstock section and pick up a 30d body for $649. It'll retain value VERY well so when you sell it you'll be in good shape. Since you're getting 2 5d's eventually the 30d should be tons, and certainly isn't a slouch in the quality department!
That's just my two cents. Hope this helps!

I have setups for both the 40D and the 5D and I much prefer my 5D setup with the 70-200 2.8 IS and a 24-70 2.8, 50mm 1.4 and a 16-35 wide.
I was told by an employee at Samy's Camera in LA a few weeks ago that they're not even going to announce the new 5D till August, let alone release it months after that. I'm not holding my breath just yet.

I feel like Canon still has a better high ISO performance and is sharper straight out of the camera. Yes, I would still be switching if there was no upgrade coming. Both of my associates shoot Canon and as we move closer to team coverage I would like things to remain consistent between the three of us. They are becoming more and more like business partners with me and so I would love to be able to share equipment, etc. I've been thinking about switching for almost two years and I've thought long and hard about the choice and feel that this is the right thing for me personally.

Is your 40D your backup? I will still need a backup no matter which way I go.

I absolutely LOVE my 40D. As long as you know how to take photos, you'll get stunning photos out of any camera. I got amazing photos out of my Rebel. It just isn't as responsive as the 40D. Nor is the 5D. The only thing that the 5D has going for it is the full frame. So, it totally depends on how big of a deal that is to you.

I agree on the 5D with 5D backup. I think there's value in having two cameras that are almost identical in operation (almost as I'm assuming the set up might be a bit different on the soon to be introduced version of the 5D you'll be getting).

This one is a no-brainer if you have the cash. 5D all the way. Also, if you buy a pair of 5D's the upgrade may just be viewed as a, "maybe I'll get one" rather than a necessity. 5D rocks, so it's successor will have to be amazing for me to even care.

You guys rock! I just bought a 5D. After a little detour almost purchasing one on Ebay and getting a super shady response from the seller, I went to B&H even though I ended up spending more. However, it's a large chunk of change and I felt that this is something I shouldn't get from an unreliable source.
On a side note, the EBay seller had superb ratings, but was pushing me to pay with a credit card, told me he didn't have to list what the item wasn't, only what it was (his way of trying to get me to purchase the $400 upgrade to the US body). When I told the guy that the listing was very misleading, he was going to add a bunch of stuff to the transaction to make it up to me. Anyway, long story short, I refused to purchase the item and will get a negative mark but I know I WILL get a 5D from B&H without any hassle or a sales person pushing me to buy more or that I wouldn't get a warranty unless I bought one. Lesson learned!

I wonder if anybody has any luck buying off Ebay. All of those dealers seem so shady.
BTW, I'm lusting over a 5D too, but hubby just got from the tax guy.

Nope, not happening this month at least!

I have the 30D and 5D and like them both. I do LOVE my 5D... Congrats on the Canon switch-a-roo! I was Canon about 15 years ago- went to Nikon- bought too much in the Nikon line and stayed there a while- then made the switch back about 3-4 years ago. SO HAPPY I DID!

I hope you love it as much as I do!

I can't speak for anyone else, but I currently had to make a decision between 5D and 40D myself. I ended up going with 40D. It felt great, does everything that a 5D can do, and it will leave $$$ to buy a great lens.
Just my 2 cents.

Except go really wide

It can use the 10-22mm lens... which the 5D can't do. So, yes, it can go wide.

It can also shoot in 14-bit raw, shoot 6.5 frames/sec, 3 inch screen in the back, and running with a much more modern processor and algorithms than the 2005 technology of the 5D. Yes, the 5D is full frame but there's more to consider in a camera than the sensor size. If sensor was all there was, no one would be buying the Mark III. Again, it all comes down to preference. Personally, I can't stand the how sluggish the 5D is compared to the 40D. The 40D is plenty of camera for me until the successor of the 5D comes out.
With that said, I know a LOT of happy 5D owners. You'll love your new camera purchase!
