I just ordered the free DVD, but I was wondering what does it do and what is it for?

Pictage is a lab and online proofing solution that does order fulfillment, offers a wide array of products, and has a wonderful community. It has a bit of a learning curve since its so robust, but once you figure out how it works its a wonderful service.

there are lots of threads on OSP about pictage - do a search and spend 20 min reading up. FYI - this forum is sponsored by David Jay, who is a huge rep for pictage.

if you're out of town a lot and/or you don't have time to fill orders yourself, or you don't want to fill orders yourself and want a more "hands off" way to have your clients order, Pictage is a great resource. It's a lot like collages
and smugmug
and printroom
and eventpix
(eventpix & collages are a bit different in that you have some choice when it comes to where the prints are done)
there are others, too, but those are the commission-based ones that come to mind.

They're basically an online ordering system where your clients order, they fill the order for you, and you get a check with your profits (minus their commission & the cost of good sold). Commissions usually range from 13-18%
They also have varying fees (sign up fees, monthly fees, per image fees, per event fees). They're all similar yet different, so you have to look at them all and see if any of them are rightfor you & your business.

Oh I get it, so what if I don't travel a lot and spend most of my time local? should I find a print shop, where do i find albums and stuff like that, should i use something like pictage or another company like them when i am just starting out? How do you begin?

There are a ton of options... for me, I chose vendors based on having the right feel. I chose White House Custom Color (WHCC) for my prints, and KISS for my albums. I needed a cheaper option than KISS so I also chose Asuka for cheaper guest books (I still offer KISS guest books, but the pricing doesn't usually work out). I signed up with Pixel2Canvas for canvas prints, though I haven't had the chance to use them yet.

I don't know why these feel right to me, but it probably has something to do with liking simplicity (though Asuka isn't quite so simple, it's just a necessity).

Also for online hosting (viewin images) we use Instaproofs. Weve thought about Pictage but the cost is too much righ now for us, so until we do more and can spend more we LOVE the price and ease of use with Instaproofs.
