Full Version: Backing up your session to an iPod

I'm wondering how many of you use your iPods as a portable hard drive backup system after an on-location shoot. Guys like Mike Colon and DC dude Armin DeFiesta use Epson backup drives with nice big screens...but somewhat small drives in comparison.

Apple makes an iPod camera adapter that will transfer images from the camera to the iPod. An iPod Classic is only $249 for a wopping 80GB of storage space. An iPod Touch with a large beautiful screen is $499 for 32GB of storage. iPods can be connected to displays either via composite or hi-end component connections for those that like using their Epson's as a slideshow presenter of your straight out-of-the-camera shots.

Plus you have the added benefit of having a new iPod for the rest of the week! Anyone already doing this? Any drawbacks?

I had thought about using an ipod as a backup device a few years ago, but at the time I decided that a new laptop worked out as a better idea (although a little bit heavier) because they didn't have the video capability.
I still like the idea and would be interested to hear any experience people have with the ipods or other devices.

Unless the have changed things in the last year or so the last time I investigated the idea everythign I read was that the camera adapter wasn't a very good or reliable setup.

The camera adapter is also REALLY slow to upload to the iPod.

The major advantage of the Epson and others like it. is that you can insert your memory card directly into the device.

That is a big plus while shooting weddings when you are on the run and still shooting with your camera. Does apple have an adapter where you can plug in a card reader?

If you are already done with a shot - you might as well just load it to your laptop.

I use my Ipod as a back-up. When I do destination weddings, or any kind of out of town wedding, I dump my cards to my mac book, then back them up with my ipod using it like an external HD. I don't use any kind of adapters or anything. I just use the regular cord that comes with me.

I like to travel as light as possible, so it kills 2 birds with 1 stone. That way I have the pictures in 3 different places before I even head home.

I do the same thing when I'm out of town or if I'm shooting a back to back wedding, then I carry the iPod with me so I always know that my images are safe and in two different places... especially when shooting in places like Mexico.

No one I've known has ever had a problem being able to retrieve the images from the iPod since it really essentially is an external HD. The adapter is slower than snot... like USB 1.0, not fun.

Hyperdrive Colorspace Casing - $199.00

Hyperdrive's customer service is excellent. I purchased the Hyperdrive Space and the software on it stopped working with my computer, so they sent me a brand new Colorspace and a two-year warranty with it.

Also, the Colorspace has a preview screen so you know your photos are being backed up. I highly recommend this for a backup source on the spot.
