I do this all the time, the best advice is to keep it simple. When you say "prom Like" it suggest that you will me stationary and that there will be some type of backdrop. Any other details you can provide?
These are usually done with 1 or preferably 2 lights with umbrellas. Shoot two frames full length.
If you have specific questions or more details I would be happy to provide more information.

I did one shoot like that... It was a christmas party for an army unit just home from Iraq, they wanted family portraits as well as journalistic coverage of the event. I set up a huge muslin backdrop in a side room, grabbed a nice stuffed chair to set on it, set the camera on a tripod with a remote release, set up the lights and then I could just interact with the subjects without worrying about the camera setup at all. No need to look through the viewfinder or even stand by the camera, just trip the release when the time is right. When no one was in line for portraits I grabbed my other camera with the 70-200mm and went out to the party to get candids. It worked great. :-)
For lighting I used 2 AB800s, one with a big softbox as a key light and another unmodded pointed at the white ceiling for fill, it was pretty boring lighting but it did the job nicely.
Maybe someone with tons of this kind of work will chime in...

Ok Tonight I do the first part of the shoot (there are two banquets, tonight and Monday night). I’m taking two lights with soft boxes, backdrop, camera, Laptop (thought about tethering?), and bottle of water, etc.
This is an awards ceremony for the electric company (AEP). I will shoot the couples (50) that are there and the award winners. Any suggestion on back drop color, I was thinking of a blue… would you pose them standing or bring a chair?
Thanks
